Australia may not reopen its borders before the end of next year.
The news came as a bolt out of the blue, just as New Zealand declared it had defeated the second wave of Covid-19. But Australia through the mouth of the Treasury minister would seem to be going in the opposite direction.
"It is assumed that international travel will remain largely closed until the end of next year and then gradually return over time."
As other states are beginning to ease restrictions on tourists and begin to think about a dedicated security protocol for travel, Australia's choice could be followed by other neighboring nations.
As stated by Minister Josh Frydenberg the way may be to create a bubble with other states, such as New Zealand, Japan and Singapore.
It should be noted that Australia (which closed its borders in March 2020) unlike many other countries, is able to sustain itself even in the event of isolation from the rest of the world for nearly 2 years, or at any rate until a vaccine is available.
