The pandemic has dealt a nasty blow to the cruise world; like the airlines, the big shipowning groups have also decided to retire numerous vessels that are too old and unprofitable. But while Airbus and Boeing face daily order cancellations and order shifts of years, it is impossible for cruise lines to defer delivery of mega-ships under construction in yards around the world.
That is why today, while in fact there is little sailing and only in the Mediterranean, Costa Cruises has announced the first details of the christening of the new flagship, Costa Smeralda's twin sister, which will be called Costa Toscana.
Costa's restart in South America includes two major innovations: the new flagship Tuscany coast, which will make its debut right in Brazil, and Costa Favolosa, who will extend his season for an additional five months.
"The arrival of Costa Toscana is a historic moment for Costa Cruises, For the entire cruise industry and for Brazil." stated Dario Rustico, General Manager Central and South America at Costa Cruises. "The debut in this country of our most innovative ship further strengthens Costa Cruises' historic 72-year link with South America. Costa Toscana will be one of the big attractions in Brazil in 2022, allowing our guests to enjoy unforgettable experiences through exceptional dining, high-tech entertainment and wonderful relaxation areas.".
Costa Toscana is currently under construction at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland. With a gross tonnage of more than 180,000 tons and more than 2,600 cabins (including the new "sea terrace" category), she is the sister ship of the Costa Smeralda, which recently entered service. Also on the new ship there will be no shortage of the inimitable Italian hospitality that has always been the hallmark of Costa Cruises, offering fantastic vacation experiences to new and experienced cruise passengers alike.
Costa Toscana's inaugural cruise will be on New Year's Eve departing from Santos the December 26, 2021. A week-long voyage in the Atlantic Ocean, passing through Salvador and Ilhéus, before returning to the initial port on January 2, 2022, marking a unique moment in the history of the Brazilian cruise industry.
