It was only a matter of time before the "corridor" was closed, and today it happened.
Starting Sunday, Oct. 18, those arriving in the United Kingdom from Italy will be subject to mandatory quarantine for two weeks. Her Majesty's Government instituted the concept of corridors this summer and each week updates the list of those open and those closed.
Throughout the summer period and until now, Italy, San Marino and the Vatican had remained on the list of good countries, so passengers arriving from our nation would not be restricted once they landed on the island.
The prevention strategy adopted is similar, but less rigid than that used by other EU countries: for a nation to be on the red-zone blacklist, fewer than 20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants accumulated in a week must be recorded. For comparison, suffice it to say that Latvia also uses a similar evaluation system, but as early as the beginning of September it had instituted mandatory quarantine to those returning to the Baltic state from Italy.
Then jarring is the oddity of the English decision, a nation that currently has a positive population rate almost three times that of Italy. The quarantine applies only to Italians traveling to the UK, in contrast if an English citizen decides to come to Italy for a weekend, or returns to England on Monday morning he or she will not be subjected to isolation provided he or she can present a negative swab in the last 72 hours.
