The German capital's new and only airport was originally scheduled to open in 2007. Too bad that work actually started only the year before....
The second usable date for the inauguration was then moved to 2012; when construction was completed, however, it was realized that the entire fire-fighting system had to be redesigned and rebuilt. It was thus postponed until the following year. The way of the cross, however, did not end in 2013, each time a problem was solved a new one immediately emerged.
It finally took 7 more years, but we are finally there.
The chosen site is adjacent to theBerlin-Schönefeld Airport, of which the northern runway is planned to be abandoned and the southern runway incorporated. In addition, the construction of an additional runway further south is planned.
The new facility occupies an area equal to 2,000 soccer fields, will be equipped with two runways and a terminal with 16 fingers. It will become a full-fledged shopping mall with more than 100 stores and will immediately try to make people forget about the delays of entry into service.
Within 10 days, operations will also shut down for Berlin's other Tegel airport. To mark the occasion Eurowings has organized a special flight. So will Air France, which, having been the first airline to land there, will also star in the last takeoff.
Berlin will thus have a single airport, where all operations will be concentrated, a choice that will surely benefit travelers as well since there will be no mistaking between one stopover or the other.
