It is certainly an incentive sui generis but, in times of pandemic, we understood one thing: marketing has rediscovered itself as creative. That is why, the initiative of this hotel in British Columbia, did not leave us too surprised.
The idea? To offer free stays for 18 years to couples who, right within the hotel, conceive a child.
Free stays for 18-year-olds: the idea of Hotel Zed
The hotel in question is theHotel Zed. A colorful hotel whose motto reads, "Rebel against the ordinary." This is where, on February 14, 2020 (and thus in the midst of the first wave), Nicole and Alexander Beshinsky stayed.
At that time, the hotel (or rather the chain, since it also exists in Victoria and Tofino) was offering the special "Nooner" promotion. Couples were invited to stay at the hotel from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Valentine's Day, for a day of pure romance (and sex!) between cuddling in the king-size bed, ping-pong, and soaking in the outdoor hot tub. Like a lunch break at work but much, much better.

The idea came from Mandy Farmer, managing director of the Zed Hotels. When her children were young, the woman struggled to spend quality time alone with her husband. "I don't think it's possible to convince someone who is not thinking about having a baby to change their mind. But if a couple is intent on expanding their family, why not try?" And that is exactly what the hotel tried to promote: free stays for 18 years to those who conceived a child right there on Valentine's Day, taking advantage of the "Nooner" promotion.
That is exactly what Nicole and Alexander Beshinsky did. The two succeeded and will now stay in a hotel for 18 years without spending a single penny. "We had been trying to have a baby for over two years, so we thought we would up the ante by entering the contest. Apparently all we needed was a little competition!" explained Nicole to CNN.
Now that Hotel Zed is thinking of replicating the initiative, it might be a good idea to try it! Not least because British Columbia is truly an extraordinary place.
Traveling to Canada during the Coronavirus
To date, Canada is among those countries where Italians cannot enter except for the essential travel (the exceptions are very few indeed and searchable here).
As of last March 18 and until further notice, only Canadian citizens and permanent residents, as well as their immediate family members, are allowed to enter Canada.
