The climb up the Boeing wing, then the arrest

Last Dec. 12, a man was arrested for climbing on the wing of a Boeing 737. The incident happened at the Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS), Nevada. The plane, bound for Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon, was delayed for a long time: after the "climb out" attempt, it had to return to the gate for inspection.

According to Fox News accounts, Carlson was not a passenger on that flight. The investigation determined that he approached the aircraft on foot from theAlaska Airlines, as the crew prepared him for takeoff to Portland. He also appears to have entered the airport by climbing over the gate.

Wearing a pair of khaki pants and a fanny pack, he climbed onto the Boeing, walked along the wing, and even stopped to get a good look at the (understandably upset) passengers. Alerted by the flight crew, the police immediately tried to persuade him to come down: the man did not listen to the officers, rather he tried to push himself even higher. However, his venture did not end well: The 41-year-old man fell to the ground, forcing health officials to intervene. Health officials who later blamed it on mental illness. But that did not stop authorities from arresting him.

Background

This is not the first time, actually, that a man has climbed on the wing of an airplane. In 2019 it had happened in Nigeria, in Lagos: again, the perpetrator had climbed up during takeoff operations and then tried to force the security doors, triggering panic among passengers.

But there are not only those who climb the wings of planes. There are also those who try to board without a ticket and not always in bad faith.

Last August, a 30-year-old man from Bari was delivered a 2 thousand euro fine for having accompanied his wife and daughter (departing for Genoa) up to their places, despite not having the right to board the plane since he did not have a ticket. The man, after stowing his luggage, had in fact tried to get off the aircraft and was stopped by the stewardess. The border police immediately fined him (2,064 euros was the amount of the fine), and an internal investigation was launched by Aeroporti di Puglia to understand how he could have boarded the plane without a boarding pass.

Even earlier, in 2018, a man had managed to board a flight Vueling departing from Barcelona and directed to Dublin. Even that time, security had not stopped him, and he had managed to board the aircraft without a ticket. When the real occupant of the seat boarded, the "infiltrated" passenger hid in the bathroom: the crew was then forced to alert the Border Patrol, which evacuated the plane by letting the passengers board another aircraft, while the man was taken out of the bathroom and placed under arrest.
