Scarlet Lady, the first cruise ship built on behalf of Virgin Voyages, after months in the Ligurian capital that gave her birth, her hours are numbered. In early January. The agreement with Maritime Stations for the berth will expire. and the giant of the seas will have to find another port to spend "quarantine" in.
The other news, in fact, is that the inaugural cruise of the Scarlet Lady, which was due to leave Miami last August 2, was Postponed for another four months. The new date is that of the May 9, with a total delay of more than fourteen months compared to the original forecast.
The ship, 110 thousand tons by 278 meters long (inside 1,400 cabins to accommodate more than 2,770 passengers and a crew of 1,160), had been delivered to the shipowner at the Fincantieri shipyard last Feb. 13, just days before the coronavirus pandemic broke out in Europe. The situation gradually escalated until the worldwide travel stop came. And the Scarlet Lady remained waiting for her "first time" with passengers on board, destination Caribbean.
She had returned to Genoa in July for maintenance work "under warranty" performed by Fincantieri personnel. Stations Maritime had granted the landing by applying a sort of discount, based on the idea that it was a temporary stop in preparation for final departure for the United States. The 20 days became weeks and then months.
After leaving it in the roadstead for most of the summer, with brief stops in port for nautical needs and to drop off seafarers, with the arrival of winter the company began paying a Rather steep bill for "parking" on the west side of Doria Bridge, where it is still located. From what is rumored, however, the agreement will end in the early days of 2021 and the Scarlet Lady will have to find a new home.
From the pages of The Points Guy we also learn another piece of news: the Vailant Lady, one of three ships commissioned from Fincantieri in Sestri Ponente (in addition to Scarlet Lady itself) will see Slip the submission to November 14, 2021, that is, six months later than planned. Altogether, this is a package of orders approaching 3 billion euros.
"The decision to reschedule the upcoming sailing dates," reads a note sent by the company to the British newspaper, "stands as a testament to the brand's commitment to prioritizing the health and well-being of its passengers and crew, whose safety is always first. Virgin Voyages is strongly encouraged by the positive developments regarding vaccines in the United States and abroad, but also recognizes the current significant challenges in combating the spread of the virus."
