In recent months We had already covered the topic of anti covid dogs, talking about how a duly trained dog patrol was operating at the stopover in Finland's capital city and other specimens were being trained.
Today's news is that the first unit of anticovid dogs is also entering service in Italy, specifically at the Cuneo Levaldigi airport. Granted, it is not the busiest in the Boot, but it is certainly an interesting attempt to make it easier even in our nation to detect "asymptomatic" people and stop them before they get on a plane.
L'Cuneo Airport kicked off the new initiative involving theUse of dogs for the detection of Covid-19, promoted by I-SEC Italia srl, a company specializing in airport security services, in collaboration with GEAC. The project, the only one of its kind in Italy, makes use of the collaboration of the Finnish company Nose Academy Oy, the scientific research start-up specializing in dog training, capable of detecting disease in humans through the sense of smell.
The Cuneo airport is the pilot airport for the project in Italy; the advanced training phase of the dogs, provided by the Carabinieri Association and A.V.S. O.S.L.J. Amici Volontari Soccorso di Milano, has already begun, and will continue in the Maxiemergency 118 premises set up by the Piedmont Region's Interagency 118 Department. Also a partner in the initiative is BIOS of Mondovi, which is providing samples useful for training.
"We are very interested in sharing participation in this worthwhile project, especially for the final results that might come from this experimentation - adds Mario Raviolo, director of regional Maxiemergency 118 -. Indeed, very interesting but as yet unexplored future scenarios could open up, not only in the airport field, but also in other areas of medical science".
