The serum Soberana 02, researched and produced on the island, will not only be intended for Cubans: tourists will also be able to receive it, with the goal of jumpstarting the economy in a place that really can't do without tourism.

Cuba has offered to Vaccinate against Covid-19 all tourists who will visit the island, once phase 3 of the serum is completed. The final phase of the trial is scheduled for March and will involve 42,600 Cubans.

Currently, Soberana seems safe and has demonstrated a good level of protection. When it is approved, it will be distributed free of charge to the 11 million Cubans living on the island. Not only that, those who spend their vacations in Cuba will also be able to receive it for free. A revolutionary decision; no other country has made such proposals.

"We are not a multinational corporation that considers financial profit a priority: our goal is to create health" said Vicente Vérez, director of the Finlay Institute (the company that produces the vaccine). Indeed, Vérez argues that vaccinating tourists is in the interest of global health: it is not a choice motivated by economic issues, he specified. Those who want to spend their vacation in Cuba and want to vaccinate are therefore welcome to do so.

What do we know about the Soberana 02 vaccine

Cuba has two vaccines currently being tested: the Soberana 01 and the Soberana o2, joined by Abdala and Mambisa (the latter administered as a nasal spray).

The government has announced the possibility of producing 100 million doses once the trial is completed. So far, the results are encouraging: few side effects, comparable to those of Pfizer, AstraZeneca & co. and good efficacy against the virus.

The rules for entering Cuba today

Vacations to Cuba, therefore, may soon be easier. As of today, in fact, Italians are not banned. They can land on the island with a negative PCR test (performed in the previous 72 hours at an accredited facility in the country of origin, and are required to pay US$30. In addition, they must undergo an additional PCR test at the airport and, regardless of the result, spend a isolation period at their own expense in one of the facilities designated by the authorities. On the fifth day of self-isolation, they undergo an additional PCR test: if negative, they are free to move about the island.

However, foreign travelers staying at hotels, rental houses or hostels do exception. They are not given the last PCR (on the fifth day after their entry into Cuba), after receiving the result of the test performed at the airport from the Cuban authorities, they can continue their stay in their host facility (they still remain under epidemiological supervision by the competent doctor).
