Airlines are preparing for the upswing in global tourism. The vaccination process continues and a sharp return to old habits is expected from May 2021 onward. Many companies are investing with a view to a "normal" summer, one that can put up 2019-style numbers.
A clear example is given by Wizz Air, which has increased its air connections to southern Italy, offering a new summer schedule to explore, with an eye toward Sicily, Puglia and Sardinia.

Looking at Wizz Air alone, passenger traffic in February plummeted by 87% compared to the same period in 2020 (just before the start of general closures in the various countries). The vaccination process and the arrival of new variants further reduced ticket purchases, even compared to January 2021. It went from 574,000 passengers to 383,000. A decline that will hopefully be a distant memory starting in the warmer months of the year.

In 2020, many people preferred to devote their vacations to discovering the beauty of Italy. A trend that could, in part, be repeated this year. While waiting for a clear and detailed program related to the health passport, many could plan a trip to Italy. For this type of vacationer, Wizz Air's announcement is a real godsend. Starting in June 2021, it will be much easier to indulge in a relaxing vacation in Sicily. All at significantly reduced costs.
This is due to the fact that the Falcone Borsellino airport in Palermo was chosen as the new base, which will complement the one in Catania, which surprisingly opened in the summer of 2020, that is, at the height of the pandemic. A total of seven new routes, with two Airbus Dedicated A321s. A valid program also for those who intend to take advantage of Palermo as an intermediate stop to try their hand at international travel. From the Sicilian airport, in fact, it will also be possible to reach Basel and London Luton.

- Palermo-Treviso - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday
This, however, is not the only Italy-related news announced by Wizz Air. Four other domestic routes are also added to the list, one of which involves Milan Malpensa: an airport from which it will be even easier to reach Sardinia this summer thanks to daily frequency flights. Here is the schedule presented by the company:

- Pisa-Brindisi - Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
- Milan Malpensa-Cagliari - daily frequency
