A nice change for those who collect Avios points: Alaska Airlines, a U.S. airline based in Washington State, has joined the alliance. OneWorld.
What does it mean and what routes are covered by the carrier. Let's find out together.
Alaska joins OneWorld
OneWorld, in the airline industry, is the most powerful alliance. It includes companies such as. British Airways, Qatar, Qantas, American Airlines, Cathay, Finnair. All carriers, these, that allow you to fly with Avios points. Now, the points can also be spent to fly with Alaska: great news, for those flying to the U.S. and moves within them. Especially since some airlines, British in the lead, already allow people to book flights with Alaska by taking advantage of their frequent flyer status and thus spending points Avios.
One will therefore be able to assert one's frequent flyer status within OneWorld on Alaska as well, with all the benefits that this brings. Emerald and Sapphire level members, for example, can use the lounge of the company and, at any level, it is possible to accumulate miles.
More difficult, however, is the question upgrade. Those who have joined other OneWorld airlines' loyalty programs may not always be eligible for an upgrade as Mileage Plan members (Alaska's loyalty program) will be given preference. They will, however, be able to earn a lot of miles, probably more than with other alliance companies (Alaska has always relied on miles to attract travelers).
Fleet and where it flies
In June 2019, there was a lot of talk in Italy about Alaska Airlines. The company had, in fact, struck a deal with Air Italy to reach many destinations in the American market. Then Air Italy declared bankruptcy And the project faded.
Where then to fly with Alaska now? In the United States, predominantly. And then in Mexico, in Canada and in Costa Rica. The airline serves major U.S. destinations, but also a whole range of smaller cities, and is perfect for those planning to go coast-to-coast. Or visit California and fly to Hawaii, or enjoy Florida and then relax at a resort in Mexico or Costa Rica.
By flying to the United States with a OneWorld alliance airline (typically British Airways, American Airlines, or Iberia) and moving domestically within the country or to your sea destination with Alaska Airlines, you can earn a lot of miles this way.
