At TFC, we are fans of the Airbus A220., since the first time we flew on this model of aircraft to Riga. When it was still called the Bombardier C-series, we understood that it was an aircraft destined to revolutionize the short-haul market.
This week, the Airspace Customer Showroom (ACS) located in Toulouse, France, unveiled the latest full-size A220 model, showcasing the Airbus cabin experience inside this exclusive customer showroom. "Today is an important date for the development of the A220, a member of the Airbus family. We look forward to showing the mockup to our customers who are already extremely excited to visit," said Christine de Gagné, the airline's director of marketing.
The ACS is the equivalent of a car showroom where customers interested in buying a plane can visit full-size prototypes and choose fittings, just as at a dealership you customize your own car.
Seven years after its first flight, the first test vehicle, the "FTV1″, was repurposed by Airbus teams to become part of the showroom.
"The interior layout of the A220 has been an exciting challenge for the Airbus teams," explain the Franco-German company. "The cabin interior has to be able to adapt and be versatile. We have to think about configuration features, such as lighting and atmosphere, allowing customers to experience different stimulating scenarios for passengers."
It must be admitted that Airbus engineers managed to do a really good job designing a premium cabin with business seats comparable in size to those found on wide-body aircraft.
Now all that remains to be done is to wait and see if, among the many customers who have chosen to focus on this model, some will decide to equip their fleet with a two-cabin layout instead of the usual 2 seats on one side and 3 on the other, with no distinction between business and economy.
To understand how popular this model is just look at the order list: to date there are 649 in the two configurations 100 and 200.
It is currently Latvian airline Air Baltic to have the largest A220/200 fleet with 26 active vehicles and 24 more to be delivered in the coming years. The American Delta instead has 41, which is the smallest variant. Deliveries to Air France (60), Breeze (60) and Jet Blue, which will become the largest A220 fleet due to the arrival of 70 examples.
