Airlines since 2020 have come out a bit with the broken bones. Unfortunately, the pandemic has strained the economies of companies, and many have suffered major losses.
On the other hand, there are those who feel like restart investing in the future and challenging the uncertain period we are addressing. We are talking in particular about Play, the tiny, tiny Icelandic company that has just been born and promises to connect theIceland with theEurope starting in July.
Born from a rib of WOW and with a boost from an Irish investment fund, it was to be operational in spring 2020 only that bad luck got the better of it and plans are due change. This led up to May 2021 when, thanks to a new cash injection, Play was able to secure a nimble Airbus A321neo with about 200 seats.

To celebrate the start of the activity, Play decided to give away 1000 tickets to those who book a flight with this new company.
Play destinations
There are 7 routes that Play will operate from June/July, unfortunately there is still no theItaly But we are confident that in the future the small company will expand the list of its European destinations.
Play's home base will be the airport in Reykjavík, the first inaugural flight will be made on June 24 to Stansted Airport in London. Following this, in July, the cities served by the company will be:
- London (STN) maiden flight on June 24, full operation from June 27 on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays
- Tenerife (TFS) from the June 28, operational on Tuesdays and Saturdays
- Berlin (BER) since July 4, on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays
- Alicante (LAC) as of July 13, on Tuesdays and Saturdays
- Paris (CDG) since July 18, on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays
- Barcelona (NCB) as of July 19, on Mondays and Fridays
- Copenhagen (CPH) from the July 25, on Thursdays and Sundays; from August also operational on Mondays and Fridays
Currently remain many restrictions for travelers, but there are some countries that are considered "low risk," such as the United Kingdom and Iceland itself.
"It is great to be able to open Iceland to UK travelers and offer competitive rates now that international travel has resumed. The U.K. market knows Iceland well, although the destination has changed a bit recently with the (minor) volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Certainly, a must experience for UK travelers, we look forward to offering safe and great value travel as we offer low fares to the UK market."
Birgir Jónsson, CEO of Play
Iceland's new small low-cost challenges the big, entering a market marked by the crisis but which is slowly showing signs of shooting, thanks in part to the introduction of the health passport and to the vaccination campaign that is bearing fruit.
The United Kingdom, for its part, seems to be a destination coveted for new airlines, we also told you about FlyPOP, the new long-haul low-cost carrier, which will connect UK with India.
The hope is that this summer the situation will still be best and that we will also be able to try out the brand new Play to get a jump on Iceland! In the meantime, we can book a flexible ticket offered by the airlines.
