Phuket confirms reopening, and announces its new rules.
Because, if it is true that Phuket Sandbox will become effective July 1., it is equally true that not everyone will be able to go to the famous Thai island. So let's find out together how the country's first, tentative reopening works.
Phuket, what will the island stay be like?
As of July 1, the vaccinated tourists will be allowed to come to the island as long as they come from a low-risk country. The list of those countries has not yet been released, as the Thai government wants to wait to see the progress of infections and vaccination campaigns in different areas of the world. In the meantime, however, it is possible to know a few more details.
First of all, the possibility of a stopover in Bangkok is confirmed.: There will be a dedicated terminal at Suvarnabhumi Airport, and direct flights to the island. Children up to 6 years of age are not restricted and will be able to travel safely with their vaccinated parents. Children and young people between the ages of 6 and 18, on the other hand, will have to take a quick test Upon their arrival in Phuket.
The stay, once you arrive on the island, is free: you can stay in multiple hotels, choosing a facility from those already registered with the SHA+ (The list will be implemented in the coming weeks and will include all hotels with at least 70% of vaccinated staff).
In the previous draft regulations there was a minimum stay in Phuket of 7 nights before being able to move freely to the rest of Thailand. Now this period has been extended by bringing the minimum stay at 14 days before being able to move for the rest of the country.
You can stay even less, of course, but if you then want to visit other parts of Thailand, you have to stay in Phuket for 2 weeks (sort of like being in trust isolation, but with all the freedom to move around the island). Soon, the details of this option will be announced: the government will announce how many tests will be required and whether there will be any provinces where tourism will continue to be banned.
The rules in detail
The Thai government has made it known that fully vaccinated tourists will be admitted, regardless of which vaccine they have received. However, the vaccination cycle will have to be complete: those who have received only one dose as they have been cured of Covid-19 for less than 6 months will not be allowed on the island.
However, there is still some uncertainty. It is not yet known whether the Phuket Sandbox will be confirmed and whether the goal to make it effective, which is the 70% vaccination of the island's population, will be achieved. In addition, to date, bars and pubs remain closed and there is no certainty that they will reopen on July 1.
Then, if this reopening goes well, Thailand plans to apply the same rules to Koh Samui, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and several other resorts. What is certain is. Thai Airways is back to scheduling flights from Europe, also introducing new routes. For now, there are no direct flights from Italy. However, it is possible to fly nonstop to Phuket from Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London Heathrow or Paris Charles de Gaulle.
