The rules change, once again: starting July 19, those who arrive in England and are fully vaccinated will no longer be subject to quarantine. This was announced by Grant Shapps, the U.K. transport minister, including the measure in the series of measures that, just from July 19, will see an almost complete return to normalcy.

Travel to England

Good news, then, for our travels in England: soon people will be able to take off for a weekend in London, or treat themselves to an on-the-road trip through the English countryside, in complete freedom. Or almost.

The stop on travel restrictions to England affects not only Italy, but all countries on the "green list" and "amber list" (Spain, Portugal, Greece, Holland, etc.). The condition, in order not to be subject to quarantine, is to have completed the vaccination cycle: One dose is not enough, therefore. Those under the age of 18 are exempt from the requirement and can enter England freely. Why is England mentioned and not the United Kingdom? Because, for the time being, the measure applies only in the "Land of Angles." Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have yet to come into line.

"To be clear, the exemption from self-isolation will cover people who are fully vaccinated: that is, who have Received the final dose of the vaccine at least 14 days before", specified the minister.

The news has been greeted with positivity somewhat throughout Europe, including Italy. And the airlines, British Airways in the lead, could not contain their joy. Not least because Boris Johnson confirmed a stop to many restrictions starting July 19. That day, in fact, the long-awaited "free all" in spite of the spread of the Delta variant. Stop the requirement of masks, of social distancing, of the ceiling of people it is possible to meet. All while espousing the logic of calculated risk. "If we don't reopen in July with schools closed and mild weather exposing people less to the generality of respiratory infections when will we?" the British premier commented. His defense strategy against variants is to vaccinate as much as possible, with both doses. For this reason, the government has reduced the interval between the first and second shots for those under 40 (from 12 to 8 weeks), setting a goal of having all adults fully vaccinated by mid-September.

The rules for re-entry

Because of the Delta variant, which has been swamping England for weeks, Italy does not look kindly on travel to the United Kingdom. So here it is that, those who vacation there, until July 30, 2021, must:

  • Undergo molecular or antigenic testing within 48 hours prior to entry into Italy
  • stay in fiduciary isolation At his or her home or at the dwelling indicated in the EU Digital Passenger Locator Form (dPLF) for 5 days, undergoing health surveillance
  • Carry out an additional molecular or antigenic test at the end of fiduciary isolation

Here, then, for a vacation in complete freedom, one will have to wait until August. If the self-isolation obligation on return is not confirmed, traveling between Italy and the UK will become significantly easier.
