As all travelers know in recent years Linate got a total makeover. In hindsight, SEA-which operates the airport-could have avoided closure in summer 2019 and waited until the advent of the pandemic to redo the runway, the 3-month shutdown and temporary move to Malpensa would have been avoided. Over the past two years, work has affected the entire air terminal, not just the exterior.
Today Linate is all new, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony is which took place last month in the presence of President of the Republic Mattarella.
Today the Milan city airport is ready to welcome passengers completely renovated and, above all, in a hypertechnological way.
For the first time I got to try the new biometric protocol which allows passengers to use their face as an ID and pass through the gates simply by staring at a camera...is cool!
How faceboarding at Linate works
First you have to register, just past the door of entrance 3 is a totem that with 4 simple clicks allows you to create your user, a one-time operation, and then you will have to associate our face with your boarding pass.
The only mistake not to make is to put the documents in the wrong hole, as in the picture above. The document should not be slipped into the slot, but placed underneath, where there is a reader that can recognize and read the chip inside the document.
In order to use the service, you must have a passport or electronic ID card, the card-shaped one to be clear. You follow the information on the screen and after creating the user, you have to have the system read the boarding card.
Once the green light is obtained, all that needs to be done is to proceed with the checks.
Who can use the service
It is currently exclusive to Alitalia and, for SkyPriority passengers or those who buy fast track access, it also allows them to use the fast track to skip the lines at security checkpoints.
Not all gates are operational, and flights using the service are only connecting to Rome Fiumicino.
When you get to the gate you position yourself, stare at the screen and as if by magic the doors open allowing you to board without showing anything to anyone.
In conclusion
Linate is ready, not only for the restart, but also for the challenge of the new Alitalia. The EU forced ITA to cut its slots by 15%, namely takeoff and landing rights, slots that will inevitably be rushed by other companies. In any case to see an Italian airport being such a technological leader is really a good thing.
