After nearly a decade Changi-Singapore Airport lost the top spot in Skytrax's annual ranking of the world's best airports. At World Airport Awards triumphed Doha's Hamad International Airport which, after a resounding climb, was awarded as the best of 2021.
The triumph of Hamad International Airport.
Edward Plaisted of Skytrax said, "We are delighted to announce that Hamad International Airport has been voted World's Best Airport 2021. Opened in 2014, it has quickly become a customer favorite. Our congratulations go to the management, staff and stakeholders. Hamad International Airport continued with its expansion plans. Introducing additional health and safety standards at airports. As the official airport partner for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, we wish Hamad International Airport every success in helping to host such an important event."
A big boost to winning first place came from the work carried out by Qatar Airways, winner of best airline of 2021. The Qatari government continues to continuously invest in improving services and quality. Qatar Airways travelers who have a connecting flight at Hamad Airport can enjoy city tours, free lodging and food (depending on the duration of the stopover), and a VIP transfer service where airline employees meet visitors and guide them to the airport and onto their connecting flight.

The overall ranking
Among other awards given, Istanbul Airport was selected as Most Improved, Changi Won Best Airport Staff Award, Seoul's Incheon was praised as Best Airport Security and Centrair Nagoya in Japan took home the Best Regional Airport award.
Japan is the highest rated country overall, with three airports in the top 10, including both airports in Tokyo (Narita e Haneda). The World Airport Awards are given through customer reviews. It all stems from a global airport satisfaction survey conducted from August 2020 to July 2021. This is the ranking of the best airports:
- Hamad International Airport (HIA)
- Tokyo Haneda (HND)
- Singapore Changi (SIN)
- Incheon International Airport (ICN)
- Tokyo Narita (NRT)
- Munich Airport (MUC)
- Zurich Airport (ZRH)
- London Heathrow (LHR)
- Kansai International Airport (KIX)
- Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
Fiumicino's great achievement
In the overall ranking, the top Italian airport is Rome Fiumicino which ranked 36th, last year it was 58th. Milan Malpensa is 78th; in 2020 it was 99th. Because of Covid, Skytrax created a second list to specifically flag airports that have done an egregious job with the new health and hygiene protocols. Instead of ranking them, it chose to simply recognize the good work done by 39 airports, listed in alphabetical order. Rome's Fiumicino Airport was awarded the first "Covid-19 5-Star Airport Rating." This is recognition for the standard of security measures and improved hygiene processes introduced to help reduce the spread of Coronavirus.
