The pandemic took no prisoners in the transportation sector; in addition to companies, airport operators suffered incalculable damage.
The latter have decided to cut costs to a minimum while waiting for the travel world to restart and, like the airlines, have looked for other ways to make cash and raise funds to improve finances.
So if low-cost airlines have come up with new fees and traditional airlines have included pay-as-you-go menus for economy class passengers, here at London Heathrow from next October there will be a new "drop off charge" worth £5.
The new tariff will apply to all vehicles, including cabs, Uber, personal cars and other, which enter the apron areas outside the airport terminals. The airport will use license plate cameras instead of ticket barriers to monitor which cars will have to pay the fee. Failure to pay the fee will result in an automatic fine being issued to the car owner.
What is most surprising is that the new fee also affects the private citizen not just the professional driver, this choice had never been made by any other airport in the world. Parking at the airport, especially near the air terminal, is always so expensive, but the 10-minute Kiss & Fly until now was free almost everywhere. Instead, you can bet, London will surely lead the way, soon to be emulated by other airports as well.
