It is official: U.S. reopens to Italians. And, more generally, to all vaccinated tourists from the European Union and the United Kingdom. The news, as soon as it was beaten, went around the web.
U.S. reopens to Italians
For a few days already, the press has been talking about a new system for classifying international travel. Now, here is the officialdom: travel ban is coming to an end and, from the beginning of November, vaccinated foreigners will be able to enter the United States (also) for tourism without restrictions.
"The requirement of the vaccination is the best tool we currently have to protect people and prevent the spread of the virus," explained Jeff Zients, White House anti-Covid strategy coordinator. Travelers, including Italians, will therefore have to show a full vaccination certificate before boarding planes bound for the United States. Not only that, they will equally have to submit a Negative test performed within three days of departure. Those who meet these requirements, complete vaccination cycle and negative test, will not have to undergo any quarantine once they arrive on U.S. soil.
At last, then, the ban on entry to the U.S. is set to end. To the delight of tourists, of course, but also to the industry operators who-since early 2020-have been unable to bring travelers from the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Schengen Area, India, Brazil and South Africa to America. Now, those who come from these countries and are fully vaccinated, will be able to return to planning trips to the star-studded continent. The only doubt concerns Italians vaccinated with AstraZeneca, considering how in the U.S. only Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson&Johnson have been approved.
A long-considered decision
The United States has been among the slowest countries to lift travel restrictions, so much so that it has not reciprocated the openness of the European Union and the Canada towards vaccinated American tourists.
As early as mid-July, the European Union began clamoring for Biden to reopen its borders. But the American president has always given only one answer: to decide will be science. He therefore convened panels of experts, giving them a very specific task: to choose how and when to reopen. To tell the truth, things did not seem to be going too well: infections in the US are still many, deaths too. And the vaccination campaign is proceeding slowly. On the contrary, in Europe, the percentage of vaccinated citizens is very high. And it is perhaps this, which convinced the United States to reopen.
Now the buffer control system will be strengthened. And airlines will have to implement tracking and data collection measures. Details to be fine-tuned aside, the light at the end of the tunnel can be seen. And, finally, we can say it: the United States is opening up to Italians again, this time for real.
