In the days when Youth4Climate is being staged in Milan, Fiumicino Airport's green turnaround is taking more and more shape in Rome. Zeroing of pollutant emissions by 2030 at the latest, that is the goal. An ambitious project for the Leonardo da Vinci, already Europe's best airport, which has long had an increasingly green vision.
Last April, Fiumicino became the First airport in Europe to achieve Aca 4+ certification To combat greenhouse gas emissions. The first in the world to issue a Sustainability-Linked Bond, which is a financial instrument designed to raise funds for investment in environmental sustainability.
Fiumicino's "green" project
Reduced energy consumption per passenger of 50% and recovery of waste generated at the airport for 98%. Without sacrificing the economic profile, rather turning the fight against climate change into a resource on this front as well. Indeed, the Fiumicino project is expected to produce 54 billion euros by providing direct, indirect and induced employment for 390,000 people, including 130,000 in Lazio.
These are the contents of the meeting "Adr the Careport- Sustainability and innovation for an airport serving the land, people and the environment" held in the past few days inside Terminal 5. Dedicated to flights to the United States, the terminal recently enabled the Italian government to safely accommodate 5,000 refugees fleeing Afghanistan.
Already today, the roman airport implements a separate collection at 97% (a threefold increase from 2012). Some of the unseparated waste is processed through a plant that allows recovery at 98%. A solidosecond fuel is produced, an alternative to common fossil fuels.
The management of the Fiumicino sites also operates in a circular mode, aimed at limiting waste to a minimum of material: thanks in part to the use of the most advanced international Leed and Breem protocols for infrastructure design, construction and management, Adr is able to reuse about 150,000 tons of demolition material annually.
Next steps
Minus 30% for water consumption, and minus 50% for plastic consumption, the everything always focused on reuse. Thanks to the 32 compactors inside the airport, Fiumicino Is in fact able to process plastic bottles. One way to produce the yarn needed to make workwear, such as high-visibility vests. And each year about 60% of water consumption is secured through industrial water reuse.
But it doesn't end there. "Adr has been initiating for years a plan on several fronts: from reclamation and redevelopment projects, to the development of a smart, safe and sustainable road system to serve the airport and the Fiumicino community." The relationship with the community is a key aspect of the airport's "green" project, which works constantly in contact with schools and institutions. Examples are the reclamation of the Pesce Luna beach in Focene and the idea of a new bike path. linking the facility to Fiumicino's urban center.
"The sustainability concept of Adr, Italy's first airport hub and Best stopover in Europe for the past three years, is 360-degree and its objectives range from environmental and social safeguards to the enhancement of local communities," it was explained during the meeting, which was attended by Adr President Claudio De Vincenti and the company's CEO Marco Troncone.
