Delta is the world's largest airline and pillar of the SkyTeam alliance.
Over the course of these two pandemic years, many carriers have postponed major changes to their loyalty programs, for example, the following has done so Lufthansa with its Miles&More, however, Delta's strategy of making the SkyMiles program worse is different.
As well as devaluing the points in their loyalty program, which is one of American Express' partners in Italy, have removed one of the most coveted benefits: free upgrades to business class for holders of the highest tier in the SkyMiles program. Now the maximum upgrade gives premium economy and no longer biz class.
The latest change is being triggered these days, and in this case it will also have an impact on Italian users.
Which ticket will no longer earn miles
For new tickets purchased after December 9 and For trips made on or after January 1, 2022, Delta's basic economy fares will no longer allow miles or other Elite credits to be earned.
This is nothing more than yet another step in making the cheapest fare the one with the fewest benefits. It is only fair to mention that the American carrier itself was the first to introduce this type of fare, which is the equivalent of a basic ticket from any low-cost carrier. No assigned seat, no baggage and boarding in the last group for those who choose this ticket. As of now, any kind of earning of points or miles also comes to an end, both with Delta and with SkyTeam partner airlines.
To be optimistic, it is important to remember that in the basic fare you are allowed to at least carry a trolley in the cabin, at least this Delta has not yet eliminated.
