This hotel was the last stop on our trip to Thailand. After passing a week at the Conrad on Ko Samui, we moved on to the capital city of Bangkok where we hopped from hotel to hotel.

The first stop was at the St. Regis, one of the most luxurious hotels in the city and then went to the Conrad and finally to precisely this Marriott.

I was curious about this structure because it is thelatest addition to the group whose name it bears in Bangkok, which opened in 2018 but, due to the pandemic, has not yet finished running in.

Reservation

Prices right now in Bangkok are so low that it would be a suicide to use Bonvoy points To book a stay. The hotel is a SHA+ facility and currently fills up only on weekends thanks to the staycations of locals, because very few "farangs" are seen in the city.

This is probably one of the rare cases where the new rule for premium nights. could bring savings to bookers.

Going back to the reservation, I was able to take advantage of a hotel promo that for stays of less than 4 nights offered a suite at a really reduced price. We thus booked a residential suite.

Check-in

As stated, Hopping from hotel to hotel, we always tried to optimize time of check-out/check-in, aiming for facilities that are close to each other so that you don't have to waste too much time in commuting that in a city like Bangkok can become biblical. We arrived at the Marriott shortly after 11 a.m., hoping that our room would already be available.

As soon as we stepped into the lobby, we were inundated with a very good ambient scent, and most importantly, we were truly amazed at the beauty of the facility.

Everything is brand new, you can see that it has only touched on the mass tourism that was in this city in the world before, now everything is more peaceful and quiet.

On the opposite side of the lounge is a beautiful room that houses the bar; everything is very elegant, neat and fragrant.

There are also a number of awards the hotel has won in its short history, including the title of Hotel of the Year in its first year, 2019.

The structure

The hotel is located in the district of Bang Rak, Bangkok's most dynamic area of the last decade. Here is MahaNakhon, the iconic 78-story skyscraper visible from all over the city. There are many new hotels such as Pullman G and plenty of restaurants.

The structure is 32 stories high plus the two of the rooftop and has the advantage, but surely it will not be so for long, of being free on all four sides, this allows for beautiful views of the city skyline.

The main restaurant is located on the second floor, while on the 18th are the gym, the spa, a small kids zone (it was closed), and most importantly the beautiful infinity pool overlooking the most beautiful part of the city.

On the 31st floor is Club M, or the lounge dedicated to those who book rooms with this service or elite customers in the Bonvoy loyalty program.

Going up to the top floor is the Yao restaurant, and from here there is access to the rooftop of the same name.

The view from the hotel's terraces is beautiful, especially at sunset. Enjoying a drink at the end of the day on this terrace is definitely one of the things to do, even if you are not staying at this hotel.

The room

To call it a room is reductive, but we had already realized this when we were in the hallway, where there were no doors except one, the door to our room, 2209.

Thanks to my Gold level, we received an upgrade to the largest suite in the hotel, which is, in fact, a true three-room apartment.

The entrance is on the kitchen complete with everything: dishwasher, oven, induction hob, refrigerator and a table where you can invite friends over for dinner without any problems.

Hidden inside a closet, there was also a washer-dryer, so we went ahead and washed all our dirty stuff without having to do it at home when we returned.

In the center of the room is a comfortable sofa and a 60-inch mega TV, one of 3 in our room.

The main room had a king-size bed, a corner sofa under the window, and the ever-present TV screen.

An equally spacious walk-in closet.

One bathroom with attached bath and shower room.

On the opposite side is the second room with two queen beds, full closet and of course the 60" TV.

And a second bathroom with a shower, in any other arrangement this would have already been larger than a regular bathroom, while here it was the service bathroom.

All the rooms face toward the city, and from the windows you can even see a slice of the pool.

Services

As mentioned, the heart of the facility is divided between the 18th and 32nd floors. The gymnasium is immaculate, running while admiring the city from above is definitely a good feeling especially because you are in the cool air conditioning and away from the heat and humidity that reigns in Thailand's capital.

Next to the gymnasium is the small Kids room and then the Spa, which occupies a quarter of the floor area.

The most beautiful part is definitely the pool. Nice idea to create a patio for the bar, so you can have lunch in the shade without baking in the sun.

The pool, of course, is small compared to the size of the hotel. But you don't come to these hotels to be in the water all day.

On either side are a small area for children with water 60 cm deep and on the other a jacuzzi area.

Of course, the best part is the infinite pool that overlooks the city skyline, from this pool you have a beautiful view of Thailand's tallest building, which opened in 2016 and has the distinction of looking like a broken lego without some pieces.

The rooftop is definitely the most beautiful place in the hotel, and having experienced it during a time when there were still no tourists made it even more magical; in the whole terrace we must have been less than 20 people.

The view is open to the whole city in 360 degrees you see the IconSiam the brand new shopping mall on the Chao Phraya River, the one that houses the only indoor floating market in the world. But you also see numerous temples scattered around the city and of course the lights all over Bangkok

Food and beverage

We tried almost everything in this hotel except the Chinese restaurant and the M lounge.

We had lunch by the pool, fast and impeccable service and tasty food. And once you realize that in Thailand saying "not very spicy" is tantamount to losing your taste buds, just order not spicy and you will be able to eat any dish of Thai cuisine.

In the evening, after messing around in the street foods, we had shrimp soup and rice brought to our room.

Breakfast is served on the second floor, and here the hotel not only amazed us but surpassed in quality and quantity any other establishment we visited on our trip.

The room is beautiful, occupying the entire floor and having the buffet area with open kitchens in the middle. It is impossible not to find something to eat in this breakfast.

There is everything and more, so many fresh ingredients available. From sushi to mini burgers, eggs to more typical items such as noodles, dim sum, and more.

The cooks then freshly prepare from pancakes to eggs in every manner. For dessert lovers there are dozens of offerings: from simple brioche to freshly made waffles, from pastries to muffii to a dozen different cereals and types of bread.

There is no shortage of fruit in this country, and the supply here is also vast and of excellent quality

Last but not least, there is a large bar area where, in addition to hot drinks and a selection of teas, there are freshly made juices and smoothies. To taste all that this breakfast offers I think it is not enough to stay a week, truly a great proposition.

The birthday surprise

I checked in on my birthday and I must say that the hotel staff really outdid themselves.

The first surprise was upon arrival in the room, on the main bed was a huge cake made from towels and decorations. BEAUTIFUL.

Then in the evening when we returned to our room we found waiting for us a cake, real this time, along with chocolate and a greeting card. What can I say only in Thailand do they make you feel better than at home.

In conclusion

The Marriott The Surawongse is the newest hotel of the group in Bangkok and it shows, the comparison with the Conrad where we stayed is abysmal, on everything.

But we liked this hotel in some aspects, such as breakfast, better than the St. Regis. Definitely I recommend it to those who want a modern hotel in an area slightly off-center from the nightlife, like the Sukumvit district. It is definitely suitable for families with children precisely because it offers all the little things that can help you better experience a vacation in a city like Bangkok.

I would definitely go back.

The verdict
Really nice hotel in all aspects. The pool is perfect and the rooftop are a real plus that few hotels can boast. The welcome is the usual Thai one, and the breakfast buffet is one of the largest and most varied I have ever seen.
