The throne has remained vacant. We are talking about that of best cheap restaurant in the world, that is, the cheapest of those that have received at least one Michelin star, the most important and prestigious global award in the culinary industry.

This title belonged, until a few days ago, to Hawker Chan, a quaint business originating in Singapore, born in one of the various hawker center locals (a kind of shopping malls dedicated to street food, which are widespread in Southeast Asia) and risen to international honors thanks to the Michelin Guide.

But with the loss of its star, Hawker Chan has had to relinquish its title as the leader among the world's cheapest starred restaurants. Where to go, then, if you want to eat really well without emptying your wallet? Luckily for you, a useful first answer is "not too far away": among the world's cheapest starred restaurants, in fact, There are several in Europe.

Moving up from the bottom to the top of the ranking of the 5 starred restaurants cheapest in the world, we immediately find a bistro located in Belgium, more specifically in Braine-le-Chateau, a small municipality of 10,000 inhabitants, 26 kilometers south of the capital Brussels.

Bistro Racine was established with the special purpose of offering a quality cuisine at affordable prices for everyone: an appetizer ranges from 15 to 25 euros, a main course from 25 to 35, desserts from 9 to 12, and during the week it is possible to dine at a fixed price of 33 euros for three courses. The average cost to eat at this elegant establishment is 26 euros per person.

Silabario (Spain)

We move a little closer to Italy to discover a restaurant in Vigo, a Galician city overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, just north of the border with Portugal. Son of a cultural and food and wine melting pot among the most charming in Europe, Silabario blends Galician tradition with a taste for modern cuisine.

On the Spanish restaurant's website you can conveniently browse the menu to get an idea of its offerings. You will discover a very good variety of dishes at absolutely affordable prices. Here, too, the average cost per person is about 26 euros.

Borkonyha Winekitchen (Hungary)

Our next landing point on this journey among the restaurants starred cheapest in the world, is one of the most renowned and fascinating European capitals, Budapest. In addition to the absolutely low cost, Borkonyha Winekitchen offers its customers the advantage of being exactly in the historical center of the Magyar capital, very close to the metro and a stone's throw from the Danube.

Imagination and attention to plating are among the best arrows in the bow of this modern and appealing restaurant. The site is easily accessible thanks in part to a section in English, and also offers information about the history of the restaurant and its chefs. To eat here, the cost per person is around the 24 euro.

Edvard (Austria)

After Budapest, it could not miss Vienna. Edvard Restaurant is precisely the Austrian counterpart of Borkonyha Winekitchen. Located in the historic center of the city, it is easily accessible by metro and is just a short walk from one of the canals of the Danube. But the special feature of this renowned and elegant establishment is the fact that it is located inside the prestigious Palais Hansen Kempinski, a famous 5-star hotel in Vienna.

In spite of this, Edvard Restaurant rightly figures among the places to eat better and cheaper the world, with a value for money that truly has few equals. In the face of an extremely charming ambience and innovative, well-curated cuisine, you get to spend on average 23 euro.

Hostellerie la Montagne (France)

The world's cheapest starred restaurant is located in an unsuspected part of eastern France. It is far from Paris and other large transalpine urban centers. There, in a tiny locality of a few hundred inhabitants called the Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, known for being the burial place of General De Gaulle, stands the Hostellerie la Montagne.

A place of peace and quiet, a comfortable retreat in the French countryside that meets the taste of one of the Michelin Guide's most highly rated restaurants. All seasoned with the undoubted virtue of unparalleled affordability: the average cost of a dish is less than the 21 euro.

What is the cheapest starred restaurant in Italy?

Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Austria, France--what about Italy? Unfortunately, our country does not figure in any of the top five places among the cheapest starred restaurants in the world. Scrolling down the ranking a little bit, however, we manage to find a restaurant with excellent value for money even here in our country.

In the 63rd position is in fact the Coria Restaurant of Caltagirone, in southern Sicily, about an hour's drive from Catania. Modern and cozy, a point of contact between innovation and tradition through the reinterpretation of typical Sicilian dishes, Coria nevertheless offers prices that are anything but exorbitant when compared with its quality, with an average of 57 euro to plate.
