Direct flight options from Europe to Alaska, without the need for a stopover in the U.S. territory, have been growing in recent years. As of next summer, the travel options will increase to three, thanks to the entry of Eurowings Discover into the market.

With the new German airline, part of the Lufthansa Group, starting June 13 there will be a total of eight direct Europe-Alaska flights per week. Six of them will depart from Germany and two from Iceland, so if you were thinking of a tour of the Global North, you now have one more option.
Here are which companies operate on the route:

  • CONDOR: Frankfurt to Anchorage; will reopen May 21 with two flights a week, gradually increasing to three until late September. The same airline will also allow, as of June 9, domestic connection from Anchorage to Fairbanks, with one flight per week.
  • EUROWINGS DOSCOVER: from Frankfurt to Anchorage; starting June 13 it will operate three flights a week, until September 10.
  • ICELANDAIR: Keflavik to Anchorage; resumption of flights May 15 with two planes per week, until Sept. 18.

Why visit Alaska

Alaska is one of the least celebrated states in the U.S., especially here in Europe, but it really holds some great surprises for tourists. First of all, despite its reputation as a cold and glacial place, it has a fairly mild summer season (May to September), with an average temperature around 22°. This region is a real paradise for hikers, with its largely untouched but easily accessible nature.

The Seward Highway or Denali Park Road are two of the most scenic roads in the world. One can also enjoy breathtaking scenery by moving more simply by train. But Alaska is not only scenery, it is also material culture: its territory is dotted with museums that delve into the history and culture of the pioneers as well as that of the natives. Although today it belongs to the United States, in places like Sitka it is also possible to admire the remnants of the culture of the Russian settlers who founded the city.
