Pink flamingos have now infested beaches and swimming pools around the world, now a giant one has landed in the heart of Florida, inside the Tampa airport.
Tampa Airport has long been known for its intuitive design, terminal convenience, and especially For its original initiatives. Now, it has a new and exciting distinguishing feature: a flamingo sculpture more than six meters high in the center of the main terminal.
The giant bird's head, neck and legs are now in place, but the project is scheduled for completion in late April/early May.
HOME, by Matthew Mazzotta, is a colorful floor-to-ceiling sculpture depicting a flamingo as it gently dips its head below the surface of the water, an illusion created by metal and ceiling lighting as part of the artwork. The immersive installation transports people underwater, inviting them to climb up and share a simple moment in the life of one of Florida's most famous birds. HOME was chosen from one of more than 700 art proposals submitted from around the world.
"Tampa International Airport has always been a champion of iconic public art as a way to welcome our visitors and give them a sense of wonder and imagination when they arrive in our beautiful region," said Chris Minner, TPA's executive vice president of marketing and communications and a member of the airport's public art committee. "We are confident that 'Home' will help create memories and inspire people of all ages passing through TPA."
The project will take several weeks to complete because the ceiling that will give the illusion that the bird is dipping its head underwater has yet to be installed. Passersby will be able to see the project take shape throughout the installation process.
Once completed, the sculpture is designed to interact with visitors who can touch it to fully immerse themselves in the flamingo's habitat.
