Yesterday I took my first flight since the outbreak of the pandemic where it was no longer mandatory to wear a mask. Many companies have cancelled the requirement in Europe as well, but it is up to the governments of individual nations to decide whether you can travel without it.
In Italy, for example, the requirement to wear FFP2s remains., while in almost all other European nations a standard face mask is required. It matters little if the carrier has decided that it is no longer mandatory.
Yesterday I was on board a Delta Airlines flight from Cancun to New York., as soon as they passed through gate control and set foot on the plane (thus on U.S. soil), passengers and crew were absolutely free to wear or not wear personal protection. This is because for the past week a federal judge ruled that the obligation imposed by the CDC was unlawful.
I must say that it made quite an impression on me to see the faces of so many people inside an airplane; I was no longer used to seeing the smiles of the flight attendants. I was sitting in the first few rows, so I could hear the discussions of the people boarding commenting on the regained freedom.
I personally continued to wear the facemask, even though the person sitting next to me was not wearing it. In the end, I would say that more than 80% of the passengers decided to travel without a facemask.
