Will anything change anytime soon regarding the regulation of international flights to the United States? Will it be possible to say goodbye to Covid tests before departure? No, for the time being the line remains the same, as confirmed by Jeff Zients, White House coordinator of the Coronavirus emergency.

Flying to the United States: Covid rules

Many had expected a change of heart from the United States regarding the regulation of international flights. A hope fueled by the fact that there are some countries in the rest of the world that are loosening their grip, especially as summer approaches. Just think of the United Kingdom, which is allowing the removal of masks on board airliners.

In the United States, the face mask requirement is expected to be short-lived. The expected date is April 18, and it is hard to imagine that they will step back and extend this precaution. As far as international flights are concerned, however, safety measures will not cease anytime soon.

  • have a valid ESTA

  • Perform a Covid test within 24 hours of departure
  • applying for the Covid test remains valid regardless of one's citizenship (while having a U.S. passport, then) or one's vaccine count

The protest against Covid testing

To date, the White House finds itself dealing with a lot of pressure related to regulations for international travel. The President Biden received a letter last March 23, signed by the CEOs of the major airlines operating in the territory (Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest, and United), who outlined their reasons, arguing for the need to take a step back, taking into account the different health care environment.

The text of the letter points out that the pre-departure Covid test, properly imposed to prevent the spread of dangerous variants on U.S. soil, has now run out of time. There is a different health reality and this needs to be taken into account. What you get, today, is a slowdown in the return to high tourist travel: "Important to recognize how the burden of the mask requirement and testing has fallen on our employees for two years now," they pointed out, "They are not trained to have to deal with situations like this and have to deal with frustrated customers every day.

Jeff Zients' words seem to leave no room for any different interpretation. It is worth noting, however, that his term with President Biden's administration will end at the April 2022 term. In his place will be the Dr. Ashish Jha, of the Brown University School of Public Health. A different course of action, perhaps in line with the demands of major carriers and the public, which would dispense with even the requirement for masks on transport vehicles, cannot be ruled out. A sentiment shared in many parts of the world, including Italy.
