Recently we have talked a lot about of Flying Blue loyalty program, for the many offers to redeem award tickets at very attractive rates, and for the introduction of the ability to create A family group with the ability to share FB points.
Air France and KLM's loyalty program has introduced, which is practically unique in the landscape of loyalty programs, a discount for award tickets booked for children aged 2-11 years old.
The discount is 25%: it's not much, but in my memory. No other airline practices a discount for award ticket bookings, while many companies apply discounts for age-paid tickets.
The other news is that children's miles never expire until they turn 18-a simple change, but one that could be part of an accumulation strategy so that they can then "give" for their 18th a super trip to their children using the miles they have accumulated over the years.
Flying Blue does not have a fixed table for award tickets. A ticket to fly from Italy to the United States can cost, barring promotions, from 55k to over 300k points.
However, it is easy to find tickets in the lower range, i.e. 55/65k Flying Blue points
Above is an example of a ticket at a cost of 65k Flying Blue points for one person.
While two tickets, adding a child under 12, cost 113,750 points. No discount on fees, which are instead charged at 100%.
Sure, it's not a huge savings, but for those traveling with children means needing fewer points to book an award ticket. If we consider that a round-trip ticket can cost 110k MR points, the minimum savings you can get is 27,500 points for each child you fly with.
