If in these months ITA Airways continued to fly Alitalia's old fleet, starting in June, things are set to change. The new Airbus A350s will be the new flagship and will take off to Los Angeles and Buenos Aires, to slowly become the backbone of the long-haul fleet of the new Italian flag carrier.
When fully operational, there will be six A350/900s in the fleet and, predictably, they will also fly Rome-New York, the most popular route in ITA's network. Starting June 14, in fact, flight AZ608 will no longer be operated with a former Alitalia Airbus A330, but with the new A350.
This is not a certainty, because car changes can always happen, but poking around the schedule on ITA's website shows the flight departing at 10 a.m., arriving at 2 p.m. local time, It seems he will be operated every day with the new flagship. A sign that, at least at this stage, one pair of A350s will be stationary on FCO/JFK, while the other 4 aircraft will be used for connections always from Rome to Los Angeles and Buenos Aires. As for the rest of the intercontinental routes to the United States, São Paulo, and Tokyo, it will continue to be operated with older A330s.
I popped over to Expertflyer and on debut day the new business class cabin promises to be quite crowded, with only 13 vacant seats out of 32 available.
Definitely different is the situation in economy with the cabin still desolately empty.
If you have booked on board flight AZ608 in the past weeks, that is, before the new A350 was placed, my advice is to rush to choose the best seat on board. In fact, it is not certain that, with the changeover, the seat chosen at the time of booking has been retained.
In conclusion
With less than 23 days to go before the first flight, the Fiumicino-Los Angeles, takes off, ITA Airways has yet to release any details of the new in-flight service, let alone show the cabin interior fittings that will take the place of Alitalia's old Magnifica.
