SWISS continues to analyze its in-flight catering system to be able to improve it more and more. The goal is to minimize food waste as much as possible by listening to passengers and avoiding generating waste due to unnecessary overproduction, the result of poor management and business habits that belong to the past.
SWISS Saveurs looks to the future and does so today. The catering service for the Economy Class of the airline, on short- and medium-haul flights, is the focus of two decidedly interesting new initiatives. We know how carriers are quick to respond to the needs of their passengers, as far as possible. When it comes to food, therefore, the only possible solution seemed to be to cram as much food as possible on board. The same is true of bagged snacks for lowcost carriers, although in that case the waste is cut down by the long expiration date.
SWISS Saveurs: what changes
With SWISS Saveurs Pre-Order it is possible to bring on board exactly what passengers want. In fact, the carrier's new food service offers the ability to book their own meals before the flight. All conveniently online. Freshly prepared dishes, whose ingredients, however, will never again be in excess, only to be destined for the waste bin.
It goes without saying that the company will have extra supplies, but there is a clever plan for these as well. Economy passengers, for short- and medium-haul flights, will therefore be able to order remotely and be sure to find the dishes they want on board. The choice is from items on the current SWISS Saveurs menu, which is definitely intriguing. Here are some of the items featured:
- salads
- baked goods
- sandwiches prepared according to Confiserie Sprungli recipes
- pastry products
- Beyond Meat Burger (vegan sandwich that tastes incredibly similar to animal meat, available only on long-haul flights)
Online order can be placed up to 36 hours before departure. For now, the service is available for short- and medium-haul flights to or from Zurich, as well as to or from Geneva, starting April 20. This will not be the only way to be able to have lunch or dinner on board SWISS. One will still be able to order regularly on board. However, this is an initiative apt to implement an important change. It should also be noted that booking before the flight will result in a discounted price.

SWISS Saveurs To Go
Food to be disposed of on board will be greatly reduced through the pre-order service. However, this is only the first step by the carrier, which intends to further decrease on-board waste with SWISS Saveurs To Go. Thanks to this service, the cabin crew of the last evening flights to Zurich and Geneva will be able to offer passengers the opportunity to obtain unsold products.
An on-board announcement will announce remaining availability, offering take-out service at a significantly discounted price. These are freshly prepared foods, just as with the regular lunches and dinners offered. They will, however, be offered in the form of "surprise bag".
