Over the years we have seen imaginative economy seat renders, it has come to be imagined that Ryanair might let its passengers travel standing up, leaning against a bench, a way to board more people and charge less for airfare.
All of these ideas, however, have fortunately not yet seen the light of day. Today we are talking about an official announcement and not from a semiunknown company, but from Air New Zealand, New Zealand's national carrier.
The skynest, or nest of skies, that will be installed on the long-haul fleet is a genuine revolution for the world of air transport, equal to, if not greater than, the Emirates shower or the "madness" aboard some A380s.
Air New Zealand's new Dreamliners, coming in 2024, will offer customers more choice than any other airline in the world, providing, according to the company, the best sleep in the sky regardless of which cabin customers choose to fly in.
In fact, today's announcement speaks of: a new Business Premier Luxe cabin, designed for customers seeking more space and privacy, and Skynest, the world's first berths for Economy travelers. For Economy customers, the Skynest concept, first announced in 2020, will be a world first.
According to Air New Zealand's CEO, "it will be a real game changer for the economy travel experience," and he is absolutely right, it is unprecedented.
When will the first nests be bookable
First of all, there is a few more years to wait, plus this company does not fly to Italy and currently in Europe it only flies to London. The first planes to see this new cabin, will be delivered in 2024
- Air New Zealand's Boeing 787s, delivered starting in 2024, will feature Skynests
- It will later be installed on all Boeing 787s currently in the fleet
- Air New Zealand will not install Skynest on Boeing 777s
Where the Skynests will be installed
The carrier, which participates in the Star Alliance, also released a map of how the Boeing will be configured and where the new onboard elements will be placed.
Skynests will be installed at the beginning of the rear economy cabin. They will occupy the space of two center rows in economy. In fact, the carrier is not sacrificing any seats on board its Dreamliners, as six berths are being installed in the space that would otherwise be occupied by six conventional seats.
Skycouch also arrives
If nests are new, sofas are not. Other companies such as Lufthansa have also announced similar products.
In practice, an economy passenger will be able to reserve 3 seats that will be turned into a single settee, allowing for significantly more comfortable travel than the classic seat.
In conclusion
I am not as excited to experience the Skynest as Singapore Airlines' new first-class suite, however, we are talking about a real revolution in the skies. Needless to say, I will book it as soon as possible.
