Around 7:20 this morning, flight AZ1380 from Genoa to Rome took off from "Cristoforo Colombo" with about 80 passengers on board.
At the moment of lifting off from the ground, a bird struck the plane's right engine. The crew decided to return to the departure airport, where the intervention procedures provided in similar cases were activated, with the deployment of rescue vehicles and personnel for precautionary purposes only. The plane touched down around 7:30 a.m. and shortly thereafter the passengers were disembarked. The aircraft is now parked on the airport apron pending further technical verification by the airline. Airport staff provided passengers with information and assistance in rescheduling their travel.
Genoa Airport has the technical means, procedures, and specifically trained personnel to ensure safe flight operations despite the occasional presence of birds, a common feature of all airfields located near the coast. Repeated 24-hour inspections are carried out on the runway to check for the presence of birds and remove them if necessary. The last inspection before the takeoff of flight AZ1380 took place at 7:13 a.m. The airport's infrastructure and personnel are also equipped with facilities, equipment and devices aimed at the same purpose, including vehicles appropriately outfitted with high-intensity beacons, acoustic cannons and sirens. There is also a centralized public address system, and laser flashlights and a flare gun are employed if further needed. All this is managed with a GPS computer system for tracking and analysis of the monitoring and detections made. The activities and facilities used are constantly verified by numerous internal verification processes and through audits by the relevant agencies.
The complex security arrangements briefly described, including technical means, procedures and qualified personnel, ensure over the years that the number of events such as this morning's, infrequent but not exceptional, is kept well below the minimum threshold of attention required by regulations.
