There is important news on the subject of electric aircraft. In recent weeks Heart Aerospace, sSwedish tartup working on hybrid electric aircraft, showed for the first time the design of its new aircraft. After the great success of acclaim for the 19-seat ES-19, the manufacturer unveiled the newcomer, its big brother ES-30 by 30 places.
Electric aircraft: Air Canada won over by the ES-30
It is precisely the ES-30 that has conquered the Air Canada: Canada's national airline has announced its willingness to purchase 30 units.
The agreement between Air Canada and the Swedish startup, in addition to the purchase of the electric aircraft, includes a participation Of $5 million. Money, these, earmarked for Heart Aerospace's R&D division.
Speaking about this was Michael Rousseau, president and CEO of Air Canada. "The introduction of ES-30 electric aircraft into our fleet will be a step toward the goal of zero emissions by 2050. Air Canada is already supporting the development of new technologies, such as the sustainable fuels for aviation and carbon capture to address climate change. We are now strengthening our commitment by investing in revolutionary electric aircraft technology. We are doing this both as a customer of ES-30s and as an equity partner in Heart Aerospace."
According to schedule, Air Canada's ES-30s are expected to enter service in the 2028. The goal is to continue operations on domestic routes, but in a more sustainable way. Indeed, the company currently operates a fleet of local aircraft under the Air Canada Express brand. The planes, all owned by Jazz Air, are larger in size than the ES-30: suffice it to say that the smallest in the fleet has 50 seats. Which translates - given the low demand on regional routes - into flights with half-empty seats.
With the new Swedish-made plane, not only will emissions be lowered, but-thanks to its 30 seats-the problem of empty seats in flight can be solved.
Not just Air Canada
Air Canada is not the only airline to have decided to espouse Heart Aerospace's green project. As of 2019, SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) supports the Swedish manufacturer through Network for Electric Aviation, an initiative funded by Nordic Innovation to promote the development of electric aircraft. The same network also involves Air Greenland, Avinor, Braathens Regional Airlines, El-fly AS, Finnair, Icelandair, NISA (Nordic Innovation Sustainable Aviation), RISE, and Swedavia.
Scandinavian Airlines has expressed a willingness to add the ES-30 to its fleet, but without specifying the number of units it will purchase.
The giant SAAB has also shown its interest in the Heart Aerospace project, investing $5 million and becoming a minority shareholder. SAAB said this investment stands to underscore its commitment to sustainable aviation technologies and innovations.
These words full of positivity expressed by Anders Forslund, founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace: "We are thrilled to have two such strong partners as SAAB and Air Canada join our mission to electrify regional air travel. In Sweden SAAB is synonymous with aerospace, and the partnership will not only support our program, but help us become part of Sweden's proud aerospace heritage."
