The end of aid to frequent flyers has brought millions of members to lose status and again having to deal with The possibility of seeing points accumulated from past trips disappear. Also KrisFlyer, the Singapore Airlines program., with the end of 2022 said goodbye to any kind of parachute. In the Asian company's loyalty program, the expiration date of points is fixed: 36 months from when they were accumulated. Sure, there is the loophole of paying to extend the validity, but it makes little sense. Among the few chances to save points now came a new one, which is definitely the least worst.

Transferring KrisFlyer points to Bonvoy points

There is a new redemption option for Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles: you can now transfer them to Marriott's Bonvoy account.

You will receive 1 Marriott Bonvoy point for every 2 Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles converted. There is a minimum of 3000 KrisFlyer points to transfer, with a maximum limit of 180 thousand points transferred over the course of a calendar year. Instead, the ability to send points from Bonvoy to KrisFLyer remains unchanged with a conversion rate that allows you to use 3 Bonvoy points to get 1 KrisFlyer mile.

The procedure is very streamlined: you don't even need to link the accounts. According to the terms and conditions, transfers take up to eight weeks. As usual, very generous timelines are put in, but in reality it should be much faster.

Does it make sense to take advantage of this possibility?

The answer is simple: 8 times out of 10 it is NO.. It only and only makes sense if there is a rich bonus that improves the conversion rate. For example, a 1:1 rate might give you some interesting bookings. The real sense of this operation is when you are close to expiring points. In this case it is, for us in Italy, the most suitable action to avoid being left holding the bag.

That said, in some circumstances it is possible to get a better value than this from the Bonvoy points, so a conversion might still make sense for you if the return you can get is, for example, double the base valuation.

From Krisflyer to more than 30 loyalty programs around the world

Foreword, it is fair to explain this opportunity, but it makes virtually NO sense except one that I will explain shortly

Now that SQ points can be transferred to Bonvoy, it is consequently possible to triangulate and move KrisFlyer points to another loyalty program via Bonvoy. As is well known, in fact, Marriott loyalty program currency can be transferred, with a very bad exchange rate, to over thirty loyalty programs. Paradoxically, then, it would be possible to empty KrisFlyer to fill a program not accessible from Italy in any other way than through this triangulation.

For example, if you aim for All Nippon Airlines' first class seat, believed to be the absolute best catered seat in the world, you will be able to transfer to ANA Mileage Club, or American programs such as Alaska Mileage Plan or Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club.

All very nice, but of course there is a painful 6:1 ratio. So, of course, it has absolutely no value, but it is interesting that this wide range of transfers from KrisFlyer (via Bonvoy) is possible for the first time. When does it make sense to make this move? It should be done when one needs to "wake up" an account. In fact, many programs force the user to have an active account before allowing, for example, to buy points or consult flight availability. With this triangulation you have a bad conversion rate but you achieve the goal Without wasting money of 0.45-0.55 cents per mile.
