"Take off to Europe!" With this claim, it is preparing to debut City Airlines, the new airline of the Lufthansa Group, which will be based at Munich Airport - LH's second German base after Frankfurt -and was unveiled in a preview by German news site Aerotelegraph.
A Cityline two or something more?
Not content with already having Eurowings, Brussels, Swiss, Austrian, Lufthansa Cityline, Air Dolomiti - and probably Ita Airways - the German giant relaunches its European commitment with a regional airline that will have an all-Airbus fleet.
According to early details, the carrier is expected to debut by next August offering "customers on short- to medium-haul routes an exceptional flying experience with the quality of Lufthansa, the experience of Lufthansa Cityline and the dynamism of a new and young airline."
In short: Lufthansa wants to Replicating the Cityline experiment on Munich airport. with a range of connections to major European cities, more peripheral airlines, and small to medium continental airports.
The Germanwings factor
In essence, then, the goal would be to improve and enhance connections from the rest of Europe to LH hubs to bring passengers then to the rest of the world. This model, also tracing the successful experiment with Air Dolomiti feeding LH's German bases from Italy, needs to Leaner, more efficient and less expensive airlines.
The fleet, however, will consist of Airbus A319 or A320 - aircraft larger than the Embraer aircraft used by Air Dolomiti or Cityline's Bombardier aircraft-for a very specific reason: it is the solution devised by German top management to hire-with lighter contracts, ed. - the 250 commanders and flight attendants from Germanwings, the carrier closed in April 2020.
It is still unclear, however, what will be the operational of City Airlines despite the fact that as early as last summer the German giant announced the creation of a new division with the task of creating a new airline.
The same Lufthansa Group ceo Carsten Spohr, had mentioned during the annual budget press conference that Lufthansa was about to launch a new regional airline.
In the meantime, City Airlines will begin near summer to recruit staff: mainly flight and ground attendants.
