Summer unprecedented flights between Italy and the U.S. is well represented by the quantity and quality of flights that Milan Malpensa Airport offers. After the first installment of our analysis of transatlantic flights, dedicated to Rome Fiumicino, it is the turn of Milan's main airport, which sees two more carriers in the field than the Capital.
From Milan Malpensa, in fact, as many as seven airlines operate flights between Italy and the States: the three sister Delta, American and United, the two Italian companies Ita Airways and Neos, the all business carrier La Compagnie and the company Emirates.
A further indication, then, of how much traffic between the United States of America and Italy is extremely profitable for airlines facing a demand that has now surpassed even pre-pandemic heyday.
In addition to the many flights from Fiumicino to the U.S., the national airline's Ita Airways operates the daily flight between Malpensa and New York Jfk. The route is particularly attractive given that Neos, Delta, American and Emirates also fly from the Milan airport to the Big Apple's main hub.
The routes of Italian airlines
Ita Airways flies from Milan Malpensa to New York John Fitzgerald Kennedy Airport seven days a week with the Airbus A330 and allows travelers to depart at 12:55 p.m. and land at 4:15 p.m. in New York.
Neos, an airline company of the Alpitour Group, has renewed its Malpensa-Jfk operation again this year. The route was originally planned as a cargo-only service, but in 2021 with the start of Covid tested flights in the midst of the pandemic, Neos also promoted the link for passenger service.
The operation seems to be working and Neos operates tri-weekly flights, on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays, taking off at 12:20 p.m. and arriving 2:50 p.m. with the B787 Dreamliner at all economy configuration. The three U.S. sisters and flights from Malpensa
Since last March 9, Delta Air Lines has resumed its daily direct flight from Malpensa to theHartsfield-Jackson International Airport of Atlanta, the U.S. carrier's mega-hub and one of the busiest airports in the world, allowing more than 200 global destinations to connect.
The U.S. airline already serves Malpensa airport with a daily flight for New York operating year-round, but from April 11 will add an extra daily frequency for the summer period.
The other star airline, American Airlines, has invested heavily in Rome Fiumicino but maintains the daily connection operated with Boeing 777 to New York Jfk departing at 11:10 a.m. and arriving at 2:10 p.m. in New York.
United Airlines, finally, operates a double connection from Malpensa: the daily flight to New York Newark (with B777) and that for Chicago O'Hare (The latter is operated with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft departing from Milan at 3:10 p.m. and arriving in the States at 6 p.m.).
The flight to Chicago is a seasonal route that departs April 24 with five weekly frequencies and then switches to a daily flight from May 28.
The opposing Emirates and La Compagnie
About a year after its inauguration, it continues French carrier's all-business class flight La Compagnie which connects Malpensa with New York Newark Airport. The service is operated with the A321neo configured in business class only, of 76 seats, and in peak periods goes up to six frequencies per week.
From 2025, it is also expected to entering the fleet the A321Xlr which due to its longer flight range (about 8,700 km) and reduced fuel consumption could help La Compagnie open new even longer routes always in "smart business" with single-aisle aircraft.
