An inexhaustible source of flights, seats and capacity: the destination United States (and vice versa Italy as well) seems to have no limits in the airlines' plans especially for summer 2023. Thus, after the pandemic had cut connections to the bone, today we find ourselves celebrating an unprecedented number of flights on transatlantic routes.

The infallible flight to the U.S.

In this article:

Realizing that the Italy-U.S. route combines very high demand with considerable route profitability, most of the connections are destined for the two major Italian hubs, viz. Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa. But medium-sized airports such as Venice and Naples have also consolidated their transatlantic business. One thing is certain: flyingarea from our country to the States and vice versa is (almost) always a bargain for the airline.

In this first installment of a series of articles that will examine the routes between Italy and the U.S., we list the operational from the Rome Fiumicino hub, which this summer sees the three sisters Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United, our own Ita Airways and the new Norse Atlantic.

From Rome Fiumicino to half the world, here are all the news of the summer season from Italy's main airport
From Rome Fiumicino to half the world, here are all the news of the summer season from Italy's main airport

The Ita network and Delta's response

The national airline Ita Airways flies from Fiumicino. to six destinations in the U.S. To the flights to New York Jfk (From June 1, the third frequency operated by Airbus A330 will be active), Miami (a daily flight), Boston and Los Angeles (five flights per week for both) will now be joined by the Rome Fiumicino-Washington - which will take off on June 2 with five weekly frequencies that will become daily in August - and will be operated with A330s; and the Rome-San Francisco leaving July 1 and will be operated with the flagship A350.

Delta Air Lines, on the other hand, has launched its largest-ever operation to Italy and looks to give friend-enemy Ita Airways a run for its money. Last March 9, the daily connection from Fiumicino to Boston; while in spring the second daily frequency was activated for New York, which will become tri-weekly from May 27.

So Ita's temporary partner-at least as a SkyTeam alliance-has decided to cover some of Ita's routes from its own hub, probably precisely to defend its transatlantic positioning once Ita operates these routes on behalf of the likely new partners: Lufthansa Group and alliance Star Alliance.

But it doesn't end there. From March 27, Delta also increases the route to Atlanta which will see an additional frequency added to the existing annual service, while on June 6, a flight from Rome to Detroit.

The moves by American and United

Also American Airlines has increased its presence in the capital introducing the second daily flight from Rome Fiumicino to New York Jfk, adding to the double daily connection to Dallas Fort Worth announced late last year.

During the summer season, therefore, American will operate up to 7 flights per day from Rome to the United States of America, more than those operated in 2019.

The second daily flight between Fiumicino and New York will be operated from July 6 to August 15, 2023 with Boeing 777-200 aircraft; while the second daily flight to Dallas will be in effect from June 2 to September 6 with Boeing 787 aircraft. These will be joined by one direct flight per week to the following destinations: Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Chicago O'Hare (operated with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner). The Fiumicino airport is actually the second largest number of flights between Italy and Europe - after London Heathrow - in American's network.

United Airlines, finally, starting May 26 and running through September it will operate a daily direct connection between Rome Fiumicino and San Francisco; once again competing with Ita Airways' new route.

From Rome to San Francisco, United flies from Italy to the U.S. from more cities than any other airline

Flight to California hub adds to year-round operations from Rome for New York Newark and seasonal daily connections from Leonardo da Vinci to Chicago O'Hare and Washington Dulles.

The United flight from Rome to San Francisco will be operated with Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, configured with 276 seats distributed among 50 full flat-bed seats in Business, 24 seats in United Premium and 202 seats in Economy, including 46 seats in Premium Economy.

    The new Norse Atlantic

Finally, the new entry of the year is the Norwegian low-cost Norse Atlantic Airways inaugurating the Rome Fiumicino-New York Jfk with a daily flight starting June 19, 2023, operated with B787 Dreamliner.

The flight will leave Fiumicino Airport at 7:30 p.m. and land at Jfk at 11 p.m., while the return connection will leave New York at 1 a.m. and land in Rome at 3:45 p.m.
