If you find SSSS on your boarding pass, it's not a good sign; here's what you need to prepare for

Very often in the comments to my articles I get the same question, "But if you have already checked in, why are you going to get a paper ticket?"

The rationale is that almost all of my videos and reviews are of intercontinental flights, but there are still a myriad of nations that for security reasons require a detailed documentary check before being allowed to board an aircraft. This check takes place at the check-in counters where the boarding pass is then issued.

If you are flying to the U.S., but also to some other destinations, a second check is also done, which often ends with a small sticker affixed to the back cover of your passport. These are all ploys to let the gate personnel know that you have passed the checks and have the proper papers to board to your final destination.

What do the 4s (SSSS) mean on the boarding pass.

SSSS stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection.. This is the way airline passengers are marked for "thorough" screening. An SSSS code printed on the boarding pass means that the passenger will not be allowed to board, although ticketed, without going through a more thorough screening and interview process and can add 15 to 45 minutes (or more) to the boarding process.

There is no list of causes that can trigger SSSS, although one of the most common reasons is the combination of Last minute booking and untracked payment.

I travel a lot and often with absurd itineraries, one-way tickets, I go back and forth even repeatedly to the U.S. for stays sometimes of only a few hours, and despite this I have never been "affected" by SSSS. One thing I am sure of, however: it is not the passenger's appearance that can make those 4 letters printed on the boarding pass, nor (I think) is it within the powers of the check-in clerks.

What to expect if you have SSSS on your ticket

In 99.9% of cases, there will be no problems, but you have to be patient and know that it is a procedure that could also make you miss your flight.

1. If you are traveling in company you will be separated from the other group members at security checks
2. Hand luggage and personal items will be thoroughly checked
3. You will be subjected to a more in-depth interview about travel intentions, what you will do at your destination, whether you have friends or ulterior motives for the trip
4. Personal devices (cell phones, computers) may also be checked, and you may be asked to open your social profile
5. Any checked baggage will also be subjected to closer scrutiny

At the end of this inspection you will receive a boarding pass with no more SSSSs and can prepare to board.

If you happen to win the SSSS lottery stay calm, go straight to the security checkpoint, and if in doubt ask the check-in clerk what to do. Of course, it is a hassle, but it is an intentional practice to ensure maximum security for all.
