Covid restrictions seem a distant memory, but it is not that far away. There are still nations in the world that require travelers to prove they are vaccinated to be able to travel: one such destination is the United States, which Since they reopened the borders in November 2021. to date, they have always maintained the requirement for non-U.S. passengers to prove that they have completed their vaccination requirements.
As we had written last month, the fateful day that ends the restrictions imposed by the Biden administration has arrived.
Today also came the official note from the White House.
In 2021, the Biden-Harris administration announced COVID-19 vaccination requirements to promote healthy and safe people and efficient workplaces, protecting vital sectors of our economy and vulnerable populations. Since January 2021, deaths from COVID-19 have decreased by 95% and hospitalizations have decreased by nearly 91%. Globally, deaths from COVID-19 are at their lowest levels since the beginning of the pandemic. Following a whole-of-government effort that resulted in a record number of nearly 270 million Americans receiving at least one injection of the COVID-19 vaccine, we are at a different stage in our response to COVID-19 than when many of these requirements were put in place.
Today we are announcing that the administration will end COVID-19 vaccine requirements for federal employees, federal contractors and international air travelers at the end of the day on May 11, the same day the COVID-19 public health emergency ends. In addition, HHS and DHS announced today that they will begin the process to end their vaccination requirements for Head Start educators, CMS-certified health care facilities and some non-citizens at the land border. More details regarding the termination of these requirements will be provided in the coming days.
Starting at 00:00 on May 12, it will be possible to enter the U.S. without vaccination and without any declaration, just as it was before the pandemic.
There remains the requirement to obtain ESTA or a visa as the only requirement in addition to a valid passport. It is good to remember that. You don't need six months remaining validity to travel to the U.S., but the trip must end before the document expires.
