Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air has begun operating flights from Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino to Cairo's Sphinx airport, which is emerging as an alternative to the better-known Cairo International airport. The destination is of particular interest to tourist traffic because the airport, as its name suggests, is located a few kilometers from the sphinx and the pyramids of Giza.

The suburb of the Egyptian capital is located on the far western outskirts of the city, while Cairo International airport lies on the far northeastern outskirts, just outside Heliopolis. By car or cab, the transfer between the airport and Giza results in a journey that, on weekdays and during rush hours, can take more than two hours. The Egyptian metropolis is huge, has few major roads and sprawling traffic. Partly for this reason, some airlines choose to arrive from Europe in Cairo in the late evening so that their passengers can avoid transfers to the city or Giza that may be slightly less than flight time.
Landing at the Sphinx, on the other hand, means that you can reach hotels located near the pyramids within minutes. This is ideal for those who, perhaps, wish to spend a few days, perhaps even just a weekend, in the Egyptian capital to explore the pyramids of Giza and those just to the south of Saqqara and Dashur (where the famous 'staircase' pyramid, the trapezoidal pyramid, and the pyramid referred to as the 'red' pyramid stand).
Flights from Milan Malpensa are operated on Thursdays and Saturdays until the beginning of July, when a frequency on Tuesdays will be added. Those from Rome Fiumicino are as of now tri-weekly with departures on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Sphinx International airport, which shares some infrastructure with Cairo West airbase, opened to commercial flights in January 2020. In December 2020, the terminal was renovated and expanded to an area of about 15 thousand square meters. Currently, in addition to Wizz Air, it is served by Air Cairo, Saudi low-cost Flynas, Kuwaiti low.cost Jazeera Airways, and German Condor.

Wizz Air also announced that, starting From next October 31, it will connect Milan Malpensa with Hurghada twice a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays), bringing the number of routes between Italy and Egypt to ten, with 27 weekly frequencies and over 700,000 annual seats on sale.
