As of September 1, Milan Linate and Trieste will again be connected. Speaking to TeleFriuli, Trieste Airport CEO Marco Consalvo announced this. Consalvo added that the tender for the route, which will be on a territorial continuity basis, was concluded on Monday, but he did not reveal which airline won it.

"This is a product packaged for the Trieste user," Consalvo pointed out, explaining that "the departure of the morning flight will be between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., arriving at Linate in about 50 minutes. From there, travelers will be able to reach downtown Milan on the new subway in just ten minutes. The other flight will be later in the day, but there will definitely be a Linate-Trieste between 8 and 8:30 p.m., allowing business users a same-day round trip."

Consalvo also anticipated prices "which for residents of Friuli Venezia Giulia will start from 55 euros plus tax, or about 73euros for those who book within ten days of the scheduled travel date."

    The train option

Both the schedule and the flight time will be extremely competitive when compared to the same route taken by train. Just this coming September 1, the Trieste traveler who wants to reach Milan in the morning has only one option: the Frecciarossa that leaves Trieste Centrale at 6 a.m. (early riser) and, after a change at Venezia Mestre, arrives at Milano Centrale at 10:15 a.m. (a bit late for a business appointment, thinking of a same-day return).

In the evening, from Milan to Trieste, the most convenient option is a Frecciarossa/rapid regional combination (always changing at Venezia Mestre) that leaves Milano Centrale at 6:45 p.m. and arrives at Trieste Centrale at 10:55 p.m. Both outbound and return, the travel time is 4 hours and 10 minutes. The round trip cost is about 57 euros in Economy and about 90 euros in Business. So in terms of price, the train remains unattainable, since, well, a round trip by air will cost about 150 euros.

    A course from the past

The link is however, a convenient alternative to a four-hour long train ride. And, for those who love vintage, a throwback. One must, in fact, go back to the early years of Alitalia's Malpensa 2000 hub (late 1990s) to find a Trieste-Milan (Malpensa, in that case) air link. Like those between Malpensa and Venice, Malpensa and Florence, Malpensa and Bologna and, even, Malpensa and Genoa (20-minute flight exaggeration). All operated with Alitalia Express ATRs to feeder to Malpensa and all, or almost all, discontinued after very few years.

Flying 'offshore' across northern Italy had also been tried for a few years (again with ATRs) by Air Dolomiti, which connected Turin and Genoa with Venice. And if one goes a little further back, in the late 1980s/early 1990s, one also finds a Linate-Venice operated daily by Alitalia with no less than an MD-80. Flight time? 45 minutes (but only on the company's timetable, it was actually less than 30).
