You know the legends of Ryanair that they will charge to go to the bathroom, or install benches to travel standing up? here to date these are all jokes and nothing more, however from today there is a company, and it is a safe bet that she will not be alone for long, Who will charge to put carry-on luggage in the hatboxes.
Who is Condor
Condor is a German airline, the third largest, formerly owned by Lufthansa is now owned by the Tomas Cook Group. Last year began a new life with the launch of the new livery, the entry into service of the first A330neo and the order of a fair number of A320/321neo for short- and medium-haul destinations.

How to reserve the hat box
Condor Airlines introduces the Ability to reserve hat racks on most short-, medium- and long-haul flights. You can reserve a baggage compartment, regardless of your seat reservation, up to three hours before departure within online check-in.
It is possible to book one luggage compartment per guest, whose reservation number is then displayed in the reservation and on the boarding pass.
Economy Class passengers can reserve a hat rack in addition to or independent of their seat reservation. Right-side hat racks (in the direction of travel) are available on short- and medium-haul flights, and outside hat racks are available on long-haul flights. The reserved hat box provides enough space for cabin baggage allowed in the reservation fare. One hat rack per passenger (excluding infants under two years old) can be reserved.
How much does it cost to reserve the hat box
As mentioned no low-cost, to my memory, to date had opened to this option. Probably as a matter of cost/benefit. Having to check who has booked and what would force crews to untangle themselves along crowded aisles and have to settle any arguments between passengers.
The levy required of economy passengers in order to be assured of being able to store their trolley overhead is not light:
- On short- and medium-haul flights, fares from 9.99 €.
- On long-haul flights, fares as low as 14.99.
At the moment, the company specifies that for premium economy and business class passengers, it is not possible to reserve hat boxes.
In conclusion
I have never flown Condor and would like to try their A330neo, personally I hope it is a publicity stunt, although I fear it is the stark reality of air transportation in the near future.
