Appointment to December 2, 2023 for the opening of the new Midfield Terminal of the airport in Abu Dhabi: a new arm expected to support up to 45 million passengers a year.
The terminal, designed by the KPF company, was initially planned to be operational as early as 2017 and was tasked with supporting the Etihad's growth In its hub.
A long wait
Construction delays (which started in 2012 and the Covid-19 pandemic have caused the completion of the work to be delayed by several years, but according to reports from the specialized website Momberger Airport Information, the opening is now close and should coincide with the National Day of the United Arab Emirates (scheduled for Dec. 2).
The Midfield Terminal - which will have the capacity to accommodate up to 11,000 passengers per hour and covers about 700,000 square meters-it will be able to "push" Abu Dhabi Airport's capacity up to a total of 60 million pax.
The terminal consists of. 65 new gates, all equipped with fingers and capable of accommodating even the giants of the skies: at theA380, in fact, as many as eight boarding gates will be dedicated. The Terminal will also provide 156 check-in desks and 48 self-service kiosks.
The area designated for the airline lounges covers about 30,000 square meters; larger even than the 28,000 square meters dedicated to shops and food & beverage.
The Terminal of Records
But it doesn't end there: the Midfield Terminal will be equipped with a baggage handling system as long as 27 kilometers and capable of processing more than 19,000 bags per hour. Inside will be 145 elevators and 46 moving floor mats.
A 3-star hotel with 163 rooms is also provided for frequent flyers. Finally, the total occupied space of the terminal extends as 21 soccer fields. The whole construction project has passed the $3 billion figure.
Tom Cruise "first" passenger
Already last June 25, however, a special passenger landed at the new Abu Dhabi Terminal. He is Tom Cruise,, who landed at Abu Dhabi International Airport's Midfield Terminal, where key parts of the movie "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" were filmed.
The movie star arrived in custom Mission: Impossible livery on a Etihad Airways' Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The interiors of the terminal, therefore, are already previewed in the new Mission Impossible movie; including the Etihad First Class Lounge.
