Catania airport's Terminal A has reopened. less than 3 weeks apart From the fire that occurred on the night of July 16-17., last night the first plane to land at the Sicilian airport again used Terminal A.
Now, however It will take at least a week for companies to reactivate all connections, particularly the carriers that had been left out, those operating flights to non-Schengen destinations and that because of size they need the whole airport machine to function properly.
The work done to reopen the terminal affected by the fire, in such a short time, was truly remarkable, and it is logical to expect that at the peak traffic time of the summer season not everything will run smoothly in an otherwise emergency situation, but as of today at least passengers can hope to be able to leave (almost) on time as planned before the incident.
The statements
News of the reopening came through the mouth of Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani after the go-ahead came from the National Civil Aviation Authority.
"We had made this commitment to the Sicilians and to all the tourists who visit our island in these weeks: from today Terminal A of the airport "Vincenzo Bellini" of Catania-Fontanarossa returns to operation. The Enac order, adopted a few moments ago after the appropriate checks and analysis and with the appropriate prescriptions for the staff, allows the airport to return immediately, already from this evening, to normal conditions."
"This is a result achieved thanks to the institutional solidarity and spirit of cooperation shown by all the entities involved," the governor continued, "which have accepted our appeal to reach a solution quickly. I want to thank those who in recent weeks have worked tirelessly to achieve this goal, the Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini who, with a spirit of service and concreteness, closely followed every phase of the emergency, the staff of Enac and its president Pierluigi Di Palma for the attention with which they followed the whole affair, and the top management of Sac. Special thanks also go to Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and the Air Force which, with its logistical support, helped mitigate the inconvenience for travelers. The return to full operation of the airport also represents a guarantee for the entire Sicilian tourism sector, which we will continue to support in agreement with the national government, which has shown great attention in the most difficult times."
