One of the questions I get most often from people taking their first steps in this world is the 1billion-mile question: "Matteo, could you do an article where you put the cheapest tickets to fly business and where you say which is the best loyalty program?"
Answering this question is virtually impossible, because as we have repeatedly explained there are too many variables that can change the situation from traveler to traveler. From travel habits (flexible or only at set times), to personal situation (traveling alone or with family) to spending and point accumulation capacity.
However, there is one factor that many people still do not fully understand: the same currency may, depending on how it is used have a different value, also of the 100%.
How to use good/bad 100k avios
There is no better way, to explain what I mean, than to use real examples of bookable award tickets (unless they have already been redeemed in the meantime) and show how the same amount of avios can give away very different things.
Example #1 British Airways
You are spoiled for choice with BA for next summer, there are still plenty of flights with free seats in all classes. A ticket to fly from Venice to Chicago costs 100k avios + tax, wanting as we have explained you can increase/decrease the value of taxes by using more or less avios points.
Example #2 Aer Lingus
The Irish flag carrier, for the avoidance of doubt is not Ryanair, which is partnered with British Airways, but not exactly a oneWorld member, offers the same route via Dublin at 75k avios and 325.5€ in taxes and surcharges. A saving of 25%, compared with €150 more in taxes.
Example #3 Iberia
It is not news that Iberia's loyalty program is one of the most attractive When it comes to award tickets, confirmation comes from the same research. Flying to the Windy City, via Madrid, in business class costs only 49k avios and 175€ in taxes and surcharges. Less than half of British Airways, this means that with the same points BA wants for one way with Iberia you can make a round trip.
With TFC responds we try to help (for free) to better understand the dynamics of this game and help those who want to start accumulating points and miles not to make the mistakes we all made in our first experiences, if you are interested or looking for answers try reading the previous installments.
