One of the most popular attractions in New York is definitely the USS Intrepid the mainstay of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. The ship, launched in 1943, is anchored along the Hudson River in the area known as Hell's Kitchen in western Manhattan. This unique museum offers a variety of interactive and educational experiences covering military history, aviation and space exploration.

What to do aboard the Intrepid

Guests can explore much of the aircraft carrier itself, walking along the flight decks and visiting interior spaces such as crew cabins and command rooms. This experience offers an authentic perspective of life aboard a warship, in addition to this the main attractions are:

  1. Aircraft Gallery: The Intrepid houses an extensive collection of historic aircraft and helicopters, including fighters, bombers, transport planes and other significant models. Many of these aircraft are displayed on the flight deck and inside the ship's hangar, allowing visitors to get up close and even into some of the cabins.
  2. Submarine Growler: In addition to the USS Intrepid, the museum also includes the submarine USS Growler. Visitors can explore the interior of this nuclear-powered submarine, gaining an understanding of the challenges and conditions of living aboard a submarine.
  3. Space Shuttle Pavilion: One of the highlights of the museum is the Space Shuttle Pavilion. The famous Space Shuttle Enterprise, a prototype used for atmospheric flight testing, is on display here. Guests can learn more about NASA's Space Shuttle Program and Enterprise's extraordinary contribution to the history of space exploration.

In recent days, a crane positioned on a barge has been providing remove the supersonic aircraft and transport it to a hangar where it will be fully restored.
