Summer 2023 is not yet over that airlines have already set out for next year's. In fact, tickets for the 2024 summer season are already on sale and American Airlines announced the opening of new routes and increased frequencies to many destinations. Great news for us Italians too, next summer will be the first that should see ITA Airways working hand in hand with Lufthansa, competition will surely lead to an increase in direct connections to the States.

The new routes for summer 2024
American Airlines today announced four new routes as part of the airline's largest transatlantic expansion since 2019. The new connections from PHL's hub will be to Naples, Nice and Copenhagen. American will also launch new service between Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Barcelona, (BCN) and will restore flights between Chicago (ORD) and Venice (VCE).
"American is excited to add three new European destinations," said Brian Znotins, American's senior vice president of network and schedule planning. "The new service from Philadelphia and expanded transatlantic service from Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth will offer customers convenient one-stop access from more than 200 unique U.S. destinations to Europe next summer."
In addition to Naples for Italians is AA's debut on Nice airport, the port of call on the French Riviera, is used a great deal by residents of Liguria and beyond as an alternative to Italian ports of call. As of May 6, American will launch service between PHL and NCE, the date chosen is no coincidence since those days will see events such as the Formula 1 GP in Monte Carlo, followed by the Cannes Film Festival, and to demonstrate the importance of the route the carrier, which participates in the oneWorld alliance will use the 787-9, the largest of the Dreamliners in the fleet.
Starting June 5, American will launch new service to Naples, the airline's fourth Italian destination. When service to CPH launches on June 6, American will offer flights to 11 countries in Europe.
More connections to Venice

American will also be the only airline to offer a direct flight connecting the Windy City to the City of Water with the return of service between Chicago and Venice. Complementing the existing service between Philadelphia and the Cinema City, the additional flight from ORD will allow customers a greater schedule flexibility and will connect to more than 100 national destinations, including multiple Midwestern cities.
American has also recently extended year-round service on routes to several destinations key transatlantic, including Lisbon, Madrid and Rome, giving customers more flexibility to plan their European vacations in 2024.
In conclusion
We are only at the beginning; a similar response is to be expected from Delta as well. A logical reaction to ITA's decision, also with Lufthansa, to focus on Fiumicino as a HUB while leaving the doors open to carriers from the rest of the world at all other major Italian airports, especially those capable of generating great attraction in the summer period.
