The fifth A220-300 to join the ITA Airways fleet and the first to sport the light blue livery, the A220 is equipped with innovative elements that make the flying experience comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable for passengers, thanks to wider seats, new custom lighting, larger windows and roomier overhead bins.
The cabin offers a total of 149 seats and is configured in the Business and Economy classes of service with signature Safran leather recliners in blue and beige cabin tones, equipped with USB power outlets. The configuration of the cabin with interiors signed by designer Walter De Silva are the perfect expression of the Company's identity, fully reflecting the brand's style and addressing "customer centricity."
In designing the interiors of ITA Airways' A220, the genius of Walter De Silva was inspired by the idea of bringing a pleasant feeling back to the interior of the plane while at the same time being consistent with the choice of a trip above the clouds. At the center of the creative concept stand out elements such as comfort, elegance, simplicity, but above all natural materials and colors. All with a single goal: to enhance the quality of life on board, and to ensure maximum passenger comfort at all stages of the flight. Blue and sand colors are predominant, as well as attention to detail, which can be found in the embroidered logo of the headrests, or in the Italian flag as an element of identity.
The A220-300 is also equipped with a Wi-Fi connectivity system through which the "traveler" can use packages modulated according to his or her needs: messaging, mailing and streaming.
With a combination of state-of-the-art aerodynamics, state-of-the-art technologies and engines, the A220 presents the ideal size to serve the domestic and European network and can boast a range of up to 3,450 nm (6,390 km). The A220 named after Alessandro Mazzola further solidifies ITA Airways' strategy of having a fleet composed entirely of Airbus aircraft, 74 currently in operation. It will enter service on short-haul destinations in the domestic and international network from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate to Genoa, Turin, Naples, Geneva, Zurich and Munich.
The delivery of the new aircraft
At the end of the handover ceremony held at the Airbus facility dedicated to the A220 in Mirabel, Canada, in the presence of General Francesco Presicce, ITA Airways Accountable Manager and Chief Technology Officer, Benoit Schultz CEO Airbus Canada, Head of A220 Program Office, Wouter Van Wersch, Airbus Executive Vice President Region and Sales Europe, and Walter Garrett, Chief Representative, Technical Asset MGT, the A220 made the transfer 'ferry flight' to Fiumicino Airport where, following scheduled inspections by the National Authority for Certification and Airworthiness (ENAC), where the Company's scheduled flights will begin.
"Today we add to our fleet the first Airbus A220 fully built according to the new ITA Airways cabin design under the banner of made in Italy - Francesco Presicce, ITA Airways' new Accountable Manager and Chief Technology Officer, said. The A220 will enable the company to further develop its domestic and international network and is another step in the strategy of developing a new, more sustainable and efficient fleet with cutting-edge technologies that optimize efficiency and service quality while significantly reducing environmental impact.

Therefore, Presicce wanted to participate and engage the key supplier - Airbus - emphasizing the need to meet the delivery timelines by which ITA Airways will have the means with which to express the growth ambitions set out in the Business Plan - "Goals cannot be achieved unless a true and transparent relationship is established with the industrial counterpart who must be part of the same plan. And I appeal to them so that we can proactively and constructively manage virtuous and collaborative paths by which we can increasingly ensure the goodness of the product and the management of delivery delays caused by the post covid long wave: sudden increase in demand and the obvious supply chain difficulties".
