After the promotion of Hilton Honors, here's timely one from Marriott Bonvoy, with a substantial difference that also confirms the different point value between the two programs. Hilton's bonus is (almost) never less than 100%, Marriott's rarely exceeds 50%.
The new Bonvoy promotion
The offer for Buy Marriott points is valid until next September 8 and proposes an incremental bonus depending on the number of points you plan to buy. In addition, if you are among the lucky few you will have access to a bonus that goes up to 40% instead of at 35% as is the case for almost all members.
As you can see I do not fall among the lucky ones and therefore my maximum bonus, during the course of this promo is 35% The levels are as follows:
- Bonus of 25% when you buy 2,000-9,000 points
- Bonus of 30% when you buy 10,000-39,000 points
- Bonus of 35% when you buy 40,000-100,000 points. As mentioned for some, the limitation may be 40%'s
How convenient is this promotion
We are on the edge, this is definitely not one of the best promotions Marriott has done, but it is the best of this year. That means it is the time to take advantage of it to buy points only and only one has immediate use of the points in mind. The maximum bonus we have seen in recent years has been 55%, the last time such a generous gift was given was 2021.
Having said that, therefore, I remind you that points should NOT be put in the bank, they are bought to be used in the medium to short term and when the bonus, as in this case, is not so generous, one must carefully do the calculations on the real savings of the practice of buying pre-booking.
In conclusion
Since Marriott abandoned the fixed award chart. for award nights there has not been the dreaded indiscriminate raising of room prices, but this summer with hotel prices flying through the roof we have seen facilities not even remotely classifiable as luxurious asking even more than 60k points per night.
If this trend does not return to a sustainable track the game of buy to book will no longer make much sense, indeed the accumulation of points will no longer make sense, especially in Marriott where bonuses are ungenerous and points are expensive to earn in the field.
