Summer is, for airlines, a complicated time, from an operational point of view. And August represents, from this point of view, the 'hottest' month. The one in which everyone who can do so travels. And air transport infrastructure, both on the ground (airports) and in the air (flight corridors), endure workloads close to their maximum capacity.
For the airlines, this all translates into the fact that. Being on time is an even greater challenge than during the rest of the year. Statistics, in the summer, report less brilliant performance. Thus, in the past month, the ten best-performing global airlines brought 83.1% of their flights to their destinations on time.
Since this is an average, some did better and some did worse.
Colombia's national airline Avianca was the one that did best of all, with 86.86% of its 18,302 flights operated in August landing on time. In second place was Qatar Airways with 85.77% (17,072 flights), followed by a notch by Spain's Iberia (85.76% out of 15,237 flights), Brazil's Azul (85.37% out of 27,287 flights) and American giant Delta Airlines, with 82.80% of its 146,085 flights landing on time.
Chilean-Brazilian Latam finished sixth (82.52% out of 44,557 flights) followed by United Airlines with 81.61% (135,478 flights), Aeromexico (80.60% out of 18,138 flights), Saudia with 80.14% (15,477 flights) and Emirates with 80.09% out of 14,568 flights).
The rating agency Cirium, which released this data, distinguishes so-called global carriers from those listed by macro-regions of the world, namely Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and Middle East/Africa. Low-cost carriers constitute an additional sè category.
In the part of the world that we Italians are most interested in, Europe, the most punctual company was obviously Iberia, third in the global ranking. Entering the top 10 are Norwegian (84.61% of on-time flights), Austrian (81.09%), Air Europa (80.42%), Finnair (80.39%), Norwegian Air Sweden (80.26%), Lot-Polish Airlines (79.50%), Vueling (79.21%), Icelandair (78.27%), and KLM (75.85%).
Tree aspects deserve to be emphasized: there are as many as three Spanish airlines in the top 10, of the biggies of Europe only KLM is present, while Air France, Lufthansa and British Airways are missing from the roll call, and ITA Airways does not figure.
Looking at the low-cost, only Norwegian Air Shuttle appears in the top 10 for punctuality, globally. Seventh place. There is no Ryanair (first airline in our country by passengers carried), nor easyjet (second). For Italian travelers, this is not good news.
